Manchester Names Top Students

Heidi Wieland and Erin Groombridge have been named valedictorian and salutatorian respectively for the class of 1997 at Manchester High School.
Weiland ranks first in her class with a grade point average of 10.977 on an 11.0 scale. She is the daughter of Dr. Rex Wieland and Peg Wieland.
Weiland is a member of National Honor Society and the Academic Super Bowl team and received the Academic Excellence Award and the Squire Award. She was named Academic All-State in golf and first team Academic All-TRC in golf and basketball.
She served as class president four years and participated in softball, yearbook and newspaper staff, Student Council and LIFE and was a Junior Achievement consultant.
She is a member of the Church of the Brethren youth group, church worship leader and disaster relief worker, as well as a biddy basketball and junior league softball coach.
Weiland plans to major in political science at college before entering law school.
Groombridge ranks second in her class with a GPA of 10.767. She is the daughter of Graham and Lana Groombridge.
Groombridge is a member of National Honor Society and received the Academic Excellence Award. Her other honors include Purdue Junior Scholar in English, Richard Lugar Symposium attendee, Xerox Award in Humanities, American Citizenship Award, Academic All-TRC and Squire Award in volleyball and basketball, and Academic All-State in basketball.
She was captain of the volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams and was senior class treasurer, a Junior Achievement consultant, Student Council treasurer, FBLA reporter, and a math tutor.
She is a member of the Church of the Brethren youth group and has served as a biddy basketball coach and an assistant for volleyball and basketball camps.
Groombridge was named a Presidential Scholar at Manchester College, where she plans to complete a five-year accounting program.
Manchester's graduation is planned for 7:30 p.m. May 30 in the high school gym. [[In-content Ad]]
