Tuesday night at the regular meeting of the Manchester Community Schools Board of Trustees, Dr. Bill Reichhart spoke to the board about ISTEP scores at Manchester Elementary.
Reichhart took over as principal at Manchester Elementary School after Bonnie Ingraham retired earlier this year.
In English and language arts for the 2009-10 school year, 85 percent of third-grade students passed the test, compared to 80 percent in the 2008-09 school year. In the math portion of the test, 88 percent of third-grade students passed, compared to 79 percent last year. Eighty-two percent of students in grade three passed the both portions of the test, which is up from 70 percent in 2008-09.
Forty-one percent of the students in third grade earned a pass plus in the math portion of the test, meaning that they were well above the passing mark in the subject.
"That's outstanding to say the least," Reichhart said.
At the fourth-grade level, 88 percent of students passed the English and language arts portion of the test, while 79 percent passed the math section. Last year, 81 percent of fourth-graders at MES passed the English/language arts and 70 percent passed the math portion of the test. Seventy-three percent of students passed both parts of the exam this year, compared to 66 percent last year.
"Good things are happening," Reichhart said, adding that he hopes to continue Ingraham's strong leadership and keep building on the test scores.
Overall, Manchester Elementary and Manchester Intermediate schools were at or above the state average passing rate in all subjects and in all grades.
