NORTH MANCHESTER - After falling behind No. 1 (A) Triton 9-4 in the first quarter, unhappy Manchester coach Mike Parker raised his voice in reminding his players of their pregame talk.

"Animated wasn't the word. I was livid," Parker said. "I got my money's worth.

"I told the girls before the game that we don't get to play the No. 1 team very often, especially here at Manchester. I told them not to be in a position where after the game they're saying if we would have done this or done that ..."

The Squires weren't in that position. Manchester's girls basketball team (11-4) beat Triton (12-2) 57-55 on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday Plymouth beat Triton, and Triton coach Mark Heeter said his team was dealing with something new: a loss.

Now his team must deal with a two-game losing streak.

"We've played three games in 37 days," he said of the strange schedule formed as a result of games postponed due to bad weather. "We're not sharp, and it shows. Now we will have seven games in 17 days. When we play a lot, our play really picks up."

Manchester's offense picked up its play on this night. Last Friday senior forward Jessica Hicks scored 39 points of Manchester's 52 in the Squires' 57-52 home loss to Rochester.

She had help against Triton. Hicks led with 19 points and 13 rebounds, but junior guard Heather Terflinger added 17 points, six assists and five rebounds, and junior forward Ann Harms had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

"The last couple of days we had long talks about that, helping Jessica," Parker said. "We can beat some teams with her scoring 39, but we can't beat every team."

Sophomore guard Ashli Senff led Triton with 14 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Rachel Speicher had 13 points and five rebounds, and senior center Betsy Salyer added nine points and nine rebounds.

When the game ended, Heeter talked about one phase of the game: rebounding.

Triton outrebounded Manchester 38-34, but Manchester grabbed 16 offensive rebounds to Triton's 11.

In the two-point game, the key quarter was the second quarter, when the Squires outscored the Trojans 19-12 and went from trailing 21-20 midway through the quarter to leading 30-24 at halftime.

Manchester built its lead by claiming offensive rebounds for putbacks.

Manchester outrebounded Triton 21-15 in the first half, including 13-3 on the offensive glass.

"We didn't block out," Heeter said. "It's the first time this season we've really been exploited by it. We didn't do a good job of getting position and making the officials call over-the-back fouls on them. We take away their second-chance points, we win by 10 points."

Leading Manchester in the second quarter were forwards Harms and Hicks. Harms scored just three points but grabbed three offensive rebounds, and Hicks added seven points and four rebounds.

"Ann was the difference for a while," Parker said. "She kept the ball alive and rebounded well."

Manchester's lead grew as large as 10 at 36-26 with 6:18 left in the third quarter. Triton shored up its defense in the paint to get back in the game, but 10 second-half turnovers kept the Trojans from taking the lead.

Trailing 57-55, Triton had the ball for the final 10.8 seconds, but after Triton players passed up good looks on the perimeter, the Trojans fumbled the ball out of bounds with :00.1 left. Manchester inbounded the ball and escaped with the win.

After starting the season 12-0, Triton has gone 0-2, losing to 11-4 Plymouth and Manchester. Now the Trojans host No. 8 (3A) 14-1 Rochester on Thursday.

"This stretch was going to be tough," Heeter said. "We would have liked to get two of three. Three would have been gravy. We still have a chance to for one."

Losing out on other team goals, Parker said his team has a new one.

"We've kind of broken the season down," he said. "We wanted to win the conference and win the county tournament. We're second in both. Now we want to win the last six games of our season, starting with this one."
