NORTH MANCHESTER - Just before the Manchester Squires boys basketball team took on Three Rivers Conference combatant Oak Hill Friday night, head coach Gary Goshert was honored for his 100th win with the program.

Afterwards, Goshert joked that much of his success could be attributed simply to longevity. Coincidentally, the Squires 44-32 win over the Golden Eagles was a byproduct of simply hanging around.

Manchester struggled in the first quarter and was unable to connect on a field goal in the first eight minutes.

While Manchester managed just three first quarter points, Oak Hill clung to a scant 6-3 lead after one period.

The Golden Eagles struggled mightily with turnovers early and often. Oak Hill committed five first quarter turnovers and finished the evening with 22 compared to just five by Manchester.

As much as the Squires struggled from the field in the first quarter, they more than made up for it in the second.

Manchester was a respectable 7 of 17 (41 percent) in the second quarter compared to 0 for 9 in the first. The Squires finished 17 of 51 (33 percent) from the field as a team for the game.

Four different players scored in the decisive second quarter that saw Manchester outscore the Golden Eagles 15-6.

Six-foot-3 Nick Poe overcame some early shooting woes to score five second-quarter points for Manchester while Ryan Camp and Dan Bourne had four points.

The Squires finished the first half with an 18-14 lead and used a 10-3 run to open the second half and never looked back.

Greg Lengel scored nine points in the third quarter, which was highlighted by a layup that came from a Poe steal. The two ran a two-on-one to perfection before Lengel scored.

Lengel finished the night with a game-high 13 points and nine rebounds. Poe was the only other Squire in double figures with 10 points. Bourne added seven while Camp added six.

The Manchester faithful got an extended glimpse of what to expect in years to come with the freshman Bourne. The 6-3 center played substantial minutes for the Squires and finished the evening with seven points and two rebounds.

Goshert said Bourne has been getting extended practice minutes with the varsity.

"He has real good instincts and he showed you some of those instincts tonight," said Goshert of his freshman post player. "He's learning all the time how physical it is out there and how physical you have to be."

Bourne and others combined in defending Oak Hill's Doug Cox. Cox a 6-4, wide-bodied sophomore, was the only Golden Eagle in double digits with 11 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the floor.

Just before the national anthem, Goshert and his wife were asked to come to half court, where the Manchester girls basketball team presented him with a plaque in recognition of his 100th win, which came against Wabash in the opening round of the Wabash County Tournament.

"As far as I'm concerned it's, a credit to the players that I've coached, and longevity," joked Goshert about the recognition.

Goshert began his coaching career at Wawasee High School where he is the all-time winningest coach as well. Goshert was 124-91 in nine seasons prowling the sidelines of the hardwood tepee.

The Warriors, who defeated Elkhart Memorial Friday night, travel to Manchester tonight for a scheduled 7:45 p.m. tipoff. Wawasee is 8-1 on the season and boasts the double threat of Austin Kaiser and Kory Lantz.

Goshert knows his Squires need a more consistent effort to have a chance against Wawasee.

"Wawasee is an excellent basketball team. And we're going to have to play both ends of the court tomorrow night for four quarters," said Goshert.

The Squires, now .500 on the season with a 6-6 record and 3-0 in the TRC, host the Warriors with the JV game tipping off at 6:15 p.m.
