Manchester Girls Too Tough For Whitko
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
SOUTH WHITLEY -Ê"I hope some of our younger kids and our middle school kids were here to see how it pays off when you play basketball 12 months a year," said Whitko coach Ryan Cunnungham.
Cunningham's Whitko Wildcats saw what benefits working in the offseason can reap Monday night in a 51-29 loss to Three Rivers Conference opponent Manchester.
Manchester got on the board early as Libby Pattison netted the first basket of the game.
However, Whitko's Jayanna Begley tied the score at 2-all with a shot at the 6:54 mark. Whitko junior Amanda Busz followed with a basket of her own, putting Whitko up 4-2.
After a free throw by Squire freshman Christa Peden, Whitko staged a 5-0 run. Busz netted a three-pointer and Claudia Badskey followed with another Wildcat basket to put the Wildcats up 9-3 with 3:06 left in the first frame.
But Manchester made a comeback. Cami Naragon, Megan Hoch and Holly Vogel hit back-to-back-to-back buckets to tie the score at 9-all going into the second frame of play.
"I am proud of the way they didn't give up even when they weren't shooting well in the first quarter," said Manchester coach Mark Underwood. "We came out and missed a few shots. But the girls never lost their confidence and didn't let it bother them. They fought back well."
After a strong first quarter, Whitko's offense cooled in the second quarter.
But Manchester rode the wave of momentum from its 6-0 run to end the first quarter right into the second stanza.
The Squires scored the first four baskets of the second quarter before Whitko's Kristy Jeffrey hit two free throws.
After Jeffrey's free throws, Manchester mounted another run. This time, Naragon, Britt Rager and Casey Thomas scored eight straight points to put the Squires up 25-11 with 2:51 left in the first half.
Manchester finished the second quarter with 21 points while holding Whitko to just five. The Squires took a 30-14 lead at halftime.
While Whitko's offense cooled in the second frame, it froze in the third. The Wildcats shot a dismal 0 of 13 from the field in the third quarter, while Manchester netter 14 points to take a 44-14 lead into the final quarter of play.
"We did not shoot the ball well," said Cunningham. "We did not do a lot of stuff well tonight. We got some nice looks, but we did not shoot the ball well."
After Pattison hit the first basket of the fourth quarter to put Manchester up 46-14, Whitko's Angie Juricak broke the Wildcat scoring drought with a basket at the 6:18 mark.
Through the remainder of the fourth frame, Whitko outscored Manchester 13-5. However, it was not enough to overcome the Squire lead.
Although the Squires saw no one score in double figures, Thomas and Rager scored nine points each.
"I am proud of our depth and how well the kids played off the bench," said Underwood. "Sarah Purdy is sick and unable to play, and without Maggie Robison healthy, the girls picked up the slack and got the job done."
Busz led Whitko with nine points as well.
The win makes Manchester's record 9-3 overall and 4-0 in TRC play. The Squires are tied for first place with both Tippecanoe Valley and Rochester. Whitko falls to 1-13 on the season and 0-4 in TRC action.
