Manchester Girls Soccer Wins Its Tournnament

NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester won its own tournament for the first time, defeating North Miami 3-0 in the opening game and Logansport 5-1 for the title.
“(Our) defense, led by Elizabeth Anguilm, Bailey Sewell, Allison Smith, Ellie Milam and Melissa Saucedo did a great job closing down runs,” said Manchester head coach Jen Birch via e-mail.
Bethany Collett had two goals for the Squires. Her first was assisted by Anguilm and the second was assisted by Meghan Davis.  Brooklyn Howard had the third goal to secure the win off an assist by Saucedo.  
In the second contest, Carsyn Howard scored the first three goals of the game. Her second goal was assisted by Collett and the third goal was assisted by Katelyn Andritsch.  Anguilm then scored off an assist from Howard and Ingrid Borkenhagen had the final goal for the Squires off an assist from Abbey Naibauer. Sewell was the tournament MVP.
The Lady Squires will have a home rematch with North Miami Tuesday afternoon.

Saturday in South Whitley
Whitko’s girls soccer team earned its first Three Rivers Conference win, 1-0 over Maconaquah Saturday afternoon.
The game winner came from freshman Emily Oliphant, scoring her first career varsity goal. Meanwhile, Stephanie Baughman posted five saves in the shutout effort.
The Lady Wildcats return to action at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mississinewa.

Saturday in Dunlap
Concord scored four first-half goals in a 7-0 shutout of Wawasee on Saturday.
“Concord controlled the ball throughout the game. They are a very good program,” said Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch via fax. “We played hard throughout. It was a good experience for our players to take on a higher quality program. We need to learn from it and it will only help us going forward.
The Wawasee JV also lost to the Lady Minutemen, 3-1.
The Lady Warriors will travel to Argos for a match on Thursday.

Boys Soccer
Saturday in South Whitley
Whitko overcame wet conditions and the Maconaquah Braves 3-1 in a boys soccer match Saturday afternoon,
Senior Tyler Herendeen scored eight minutes into the game off a direct kick. Junior Connor Castillo scored the second goal with 11 minutes remaining in the 2nd half. The third and final goal came from  Herendeen with five seconds remaining in the game.
Whitko totaled 22 shots on goal and junior goalkeeper Devin Goggin recorded eight saves.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats travel to Heritage High School for a 5 p.m. match.

Saturday in Osceola
Warsaw dropped a 2-0 boys soccer match to the Penn Kingsmen Saturday afternoon.
“We had several opportunities to score and we just couldn’t finish. Colton Wottring did a great job defending (our) goal, Lucas Cone played aggressive and had a great game,” said Warsaw head coach Frank Courtois via e-mail.
Warsaw travels to Concord for a Northern Lakes Conference match Wednesday afternoon.

Saturday in North Manchester
Manchester had 26 shots on goal in a 5-0 shutout of North Miami in the Manchester Invitational on Saturday.
Elisel Guerrero had two goals for the Squires, with Nathan Self, Koltyn Alexander and Braydon Sewell adding a goal each. Self was credited with three assists and Jake Schannep also had an assist.
In the Squires’ other game in the tournament, the home team lost to South Bend Riley 3-1.
Next up for the Squires is a trip to Mississinewa on Tuesday.

Volleyball
Saturday in Mishawaka
The Warsaw Lady Tiger volleyball team went 1-3 at the Mishawaka Invitational Saturday, playing three teams ranked in the Top 10 in the state.
Warsaw dropped a tight match to defending 4A champs Carmel 22-25, 26-24, 17-19. The Lady Tigers then dropped a tight match to Mishawaka Marian 21-25, 25-22, 16-18. And in the final pool play match the Tigers were also defeated by Elkhart Memorial 12-25, 19-25.
In the crossover the Tigers defeated Lafayette Harrison 25-12, 25-18.
For the tournament, Peyton Adamiec had 54 digs and five service aces, Cassie Hoag had 85 assists, and Jordyn Lindeman recorded six blocks. Lina Mayer and Lindeman tied for the team lead with 20 kills, and Haley Peterson added 17 more kills.
The Tigers are now 8-3 and host Elkhart Memorial Tuesday night to start the Northern Lakes Conference season.

Saturday in Topeka
Whitko split its four matches in the Westview Invitational Saturday, beating Central Noble (2-1) and Eastside (2-1), and dropping decisions to Concord (0-2) and Goshen (0-2).
 For the tournament, Haley Yohe had 57 assists and 31 digs. Kaity Reed recorded 36 kills and 49 digs. Emily Day had 15 kills and 32 digs and Brianna Tackett added 15 kills for the Lady Wildcats.
The team will host Three Rivers Conference for North Miami Thursday night.

Cross Country
Saturday in DeKalb
While resting their top runners, the Warsaw Lady Tigers finished seventh in the DeKalb Baron Classic Saturday.
Amanda Hermann paced the Lady Tigers, finishing 30th in 21:59. All seven runners on the Warsaw varsity finished within 10 places and 37 seconds of each other.
The team opens Northern Lakes Conference competition Tuesday when they host Northridge and NorthWood. The race will start a 6 p.m., and hour later than previously announced.

Senior Brigit Nemitz finished eighth overall in 21:09 for Whitko in the Northfield Invitational Saturday. The team didn’t score team points this meet due to their fifth runner  being out with an injury.
The other three runners for the Lady Wildcats were junior Suzanne Sickafoose, who finished 14th in  22:26, junior Hanna Yohe was 26th in 23:33 and freshman Lizz Foutz was 44th in 27:57.
Whitko runs again Saturday at the Marion Invitational on the Indiana Wesleyan University campus.

Saturday in Lagrange
Wawasee’s girls cross country team finished second and the boys team fourth in the Panther Run Invitational hosted by Prairie Heights High School Saturday morning.
Aubrey Kuhn led the Lady Warrior effort, finishing seventh in 21:11. McKenzie Smith was 11th, Elizabeth Zorn 17th, Yanelly Pizana 23rd and Bailey Schroeder 24th.
The boys were led by Spencer Hare’s seventh place finish in 17:25. Luke Griner was 15th, Sam Griner 27th, Ben Hoffert 28th, and Braxton Alexander 38th in the race.
Both teams open Northern Lakes Conference competition when they host Elkhart Memorial and Plymouth Tuesday afternoon.
