Manchester Girls Fall In Regional Final

Katie Bowers hit a three-point shot late in the second quarter to give the Lady Squires a 23-15 lead.
Manchester controlled most of the first two quarters until Oak Hill used a 7-2 run to close the score to three at halftime, 25-22. Oak Hill's Kasey Thompson hit a three-point basket as time ran out in the first half.
[[In-content Ad]]"The girls played a great basketball game tonight. This was not the first time in the tournament we were down. They just kept battling back and did what it took to win tonight," Oak Hill Coach Todd Law said.
Manchester overcame early turnovers to take a 16-13 lead after one period of play. Christa Peden scored four points down the stretch to take the lead. Peden finished with 12 points, leading the Lady Squires in scoring.
"Our girls came into this game very confident. They believed they could play with Oak Hill tonight. They did but they just came up short," Manchester Coach Mark Underwood said.
The Golden Eagles came out in the second half and took advantage of the momentum they had going into the locker room. Courtney Moses, a freshman, hit a jump shot to put Oak Hill up 41-35 late in the third quarter.
Peden hit two free throws to cut the Lady Eagle lead to 41-37.
"I believe the run that Oak Hill started late in the second quarter and early in the third was the turning point of the game," Underwood said.
Audrey Siebrase finished the third-period scoring by converting a three-point play attempt to close the scoring to 41-40.
Manchester came out in the fourth quarter and took a 46-41 lead with a 6-0 run. The run was capped by Peden, who rebounded a missed shot by Libby Pattison and laid the ball back into the basket.
Thompson, a senior, then scored seven of the last nine points of the game for Oak Hill. The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 9-0 run to secure the championship.
"Our seniors stepped up tonight and pulled us through to victory. They have done a great job all year with their leadership," Law said.
Thompson led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. She went 3 of 5 from behind the three-point line.
"I told the girls to hold their head up high tonight. They just competed with a team that was rated No. 2 in the state. Any given night we could beat Oak Hill. That is how much confidence I have in this team." Underwood said.
"Manchester gave us a good fight. They have seven seniors and they brought a lot of experience with them. They have been here three of the last seven years. Our girls just stepped up and did the job." Law said.
The seven seniors playing their last game for Manchester were Pattison, Siebrase, Peden ,Holly Vogel, Caroline Andersen, Mercedes Lockhart and Danielle Walters.
"The seniors on this team are going to be greatly missed. There is no doubt in my mind that each and every one of them will be successful in life and accomplish what they want. They have been great to have around," Underwood said.
Pattison contributed to the cause with 11 points and eight rebounds. She also had two steals.
Siebrase added six points and four rebounds.
Andersen, Bowers and Audrey Johnson each had five points. Vogel finished with two points to round out the scoring for the Squires.
"Congratulations to Coach Todd Law and Oak Hill. He has done a great job with his team this year," Underwood said.
Oak Hill's Moses added 10 points. Krystal Hevner and Ashley Pickering each had six. Lauren Meese and Kristen Hicks added five points apiece to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
Oak Hill will face Jimyown in the Elkhart Semistate Saturday.
Manchester came into the South Adams Regional against a 21-2 Garrett Railroaders as underdogs. The Lady Squires advanced to the regional finals with a 53-47 win.
Andersen scored 15 points to lead all scores for the game. Andersen scored nine points in the second half to lead the charge.
Andersen finished 9 of 12 from the free throw line.
The Railroaders were led in scoring by Jessica Walker, who finished with 13 points.
Katie Carunchia added 12 points. Molly Getts finished with 10.
Manchester finished their season with a 20-4 record. The Squires shared the Three Rivers Conference title with Tippecanoe Valley.
"This has been a great year for us. As I said before, they just never gave up and they believed they could beat any body. That is a sign of a great team," Underwood said.
