N. MANCHESTER - Despite the winter storm warnings, North Miami's girls basketball weathered the travel to North Manchester for a Three Rivers Conference matchup Saturday night.

The host Squires overcame an early collapse in the first half and an eight-point deficit late in the third quarter to come away with a 62-57 victory.[[In-content Ad]]Manchester finished the game with a 10-2 run to secure the win.

"We came out early in the game and started strong," said Manchester coach Mark Underwood. "That has been our M.O. this year. We didn't come out in the second half and play very hard."

With the Squires down 44-38 at the end of the third, Jessica Bedke caught fire and scored 13 points in the final stanza. Bedke, who finished the game with 18 points, scored seven of the Squires' last nine points.

"Jessica came alive in the third quarter and did a nice job for us," said Underwood. "I challenged the girls going into the fourth and they stepped up and Jessica led the way."

Manchester took control of the game early, and then North Miami started getting the ball down low to 5-foot-10 center Tina Huffman, who scored easy buckets to get the Warriors back into the game. Huffman dominated the inside until the fourth quarter and finished with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Squires began to double team Huffman and kept her scoreless in the fourth quarter to climb back into the game.

"You have to admit Huffman has a nice touch around the basket," said Underwood. "Size has been our Achilles heel all year. At any given time we have five guards out on the floor. The girls did a nice job containing her late in the game."

Noelle Patrick hit two free throws to tie the game at 46-46 with 6:44 left in the game before North Miami scored two straight baskets to go up 51-46. Patrick then hit two more free throws before Bedke went on her scoring streak.

Bedke hit a jumper to tie the game at 53-all. On the next possession, she hit one of two free throws. On the missed attempt, Katie Bowers rebounded the shot and hit Bedke with a pass and scored to give the Squires the lead for good.

Alicia Burrus of North Miami kept the Warriors in the game late into the fourth quarter. Burrus torched Manchester for a game-high 25 points. She also finished with five rebounds.

Every one came out and did a nice job for us," said Underwood. "The seniors on this team stepped up and played harder when they needed to, leading the younger kids."

Katie Bowers was a key player in the comeback win, as she finished the fourth with six of her 15 points. She also pulled down nine rebounds and and had two steals.

North Miami pulled within two, 27-25, at the half, as Burrus hit a rebound basket at the buzzer.

The Warriors then held Manchester to nine points in the third quarter the contest became a game of runs. North Miami, which scored 19 points in the third, used two 6-0 runs to increase its lead going into the final stanza.

"We just finally took the momentum away from them and put it on us," said Underwood. "The big M (momentum) is what the game of basketball is all about."

Amber Fratus led Manchester in the first half, scoring 10 of her 16 points, with eight coming in the first quarter. Fratus finished the game 7 of 11 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds.

"We didn't come here to eat popcorn and watch a basketball game," said Underwood. "We had points where the kids just stood around and watched as the ball went down low and they scored. I challenged them and told them that they had step up and play. After all we came to play basketball."

Patrick finished with seven points, including key free throws in the fourth. She was 4 of 4 from the charity stripe, all in the fourth quarter. Patrick also had three key steals in the fourth quarter.

"The girls just never gave up and kept playing hard," said Underwood. "That was the biggest key to our victory tonight."
