Manchester FunFest On Tap This Week

NORTH MANCHESTER - Four days of fun and games are planned at the 1997 North Manchester FunFest.

The food court will be open during festival hours every day.

Pre-Fun Fest events - youth basketball and basketball tournaments - began Sunday and end Wednesday.

Regular festival events get under way Thursday, beginning at 11 a.m. with a free swim for adults at the Community Pool. Additional activities Thursday include the summer playground at TLC Playground and a Fun Meet/Water Carnival at the Community Pool from 1 to 3 p.m.; youth basketball from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Market Square; a Rotary Club Auction at Market Square North and a pet parade at Second Street tent, both beginning at 6 p.m.; and alternative music at Market Square from 8 to 10 p.m.

The festival gets an earlier start on Friday, with Crafts in the Park from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Warvel Park. The summer playground will be open again from 1 to 3 p.m.; there will be a Cruise-In sponsored by Cruizin Illusions from noon until midnight; and attendees can fill their bellies at the chicken barbecue from 4 to 8 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church and the free watermelon feed from 5 to 8 p.m. at Indiana Lawrence Bank. Friday's events conclude with a performance by Spike & the Bulldogs from 8 to 11 p.m. at Market Square.

A full slate of events is planned for Saturday, beginning with a pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Moose Lodge.

Other morning events include a 1-mile fun run at 8 and a 5K run at 8:30, both departing from the Community Pool. The Farmer's Market will be open from 8 a.m. until noon, and the 18th annual table tennis tourney takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Scout Hall. From 10 to 10:45, babies will be scrambling throught the Second Street tent during the diaper derby sponsored by Pizza Hut, and from 10:30 a.m. until noon, an instrumental ensemble and Joyce Fry will perform outside the Hospitality House.

Moving into the afternoon on Saturday, there will be sporting events, a fish fry and a baton demonstration.

The Cruise-In continues at the park from 4 to 9 p.m., and the festival parade - with the theme "Tree City, USA" - is set for 6 p.m.

Other evening events include square dancing, tae kwon do demonstrations and karaoke in the Second Street tent beginning at 8 p.m. To close out your Saturday, pull up a float and enjoy the "dive-in" movie presentation of "Jaws" at the Community Pool. Showtime is 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.

On Sunday - the final day of the festival - there will be more sporting events, as well as performance by cloggers and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic string quartet and a line dancing exhibition. Additionally, there will be a community hymn sing, a gospel concert and "inspirational words."
