NORTH MANCHESTER - When Gary Goshert came to Manchester he knew he would be taking over a team that would be small, something he was used to at Wawasee, his former school.
Well, the Fort Wayne Wayne Generals should him just how small his new team is in beating up the Squires 62-49 Wednesday.
Wayne jumped out to an early 6-point lead using the inside play of 6-foot-4 Ben Corley. Early on, Corley hit two inside layups and assisted on a 3-pointer as he dominated early.
Manchester jumped back into it with a 6-point run, mixing up the play and using scrappy defense to make key steals to keep the larger Generals at bay.
The Squires came out with more strong defense in the second quarter containing Wayne and forcing them to be pateint.
Manchester's defense seemed to fold in the last minutes of the second half allowing Wayne to open up and go on a 4-point run and take a 7-point halftime lead.
The Squires continued the lack of the tough defense in the second half and Wayne made them pay. For every field goal the Manchester hit, the Generals hit two, and ran up the score to 43-31 at the end of the third quarter.
The Squires had their opportunities to cut into the lead in both the third and fourth quarters, but were unable to hit the open shot and free throws, focring them to attempt to shoot threes to get back in it, but all attempts failed.
"I'm not displeaded, I don't like losing and making some of the mistakes that we made out their, but I like the scrappiness, and some of the things are just lack of being together and I think time will help those types of things," Goshert said, "I think we learned a lot about what coach is talking about in practice and now they've seen it in a game situation.
"When things like his happen we used have to have blind faith, they do, I do, we have to hang in their no matter what the situation, and we're gonna get better, there's no doubt in my mind, the longer we're together, the more they get used to the thing we do both offensively and defensively, we'll come together," Goshert said.
Scot Croner lead for Manchester with 15 points, and Eric Swan followed with 13.
Goshert will take his Squires (0-1) on the road Saturday to face Wabash. [[In-content Ad]]
