Grace Volleyball Wins First Ever National Tournament Game

Times-Union Staff Report

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - The Grace College volleyball team got its first win in school history at the NAIA National Tournament Thursday, defeating Loyola (La.) 30-23, 30-15, 30-23. The win came on the heels of a 30-18, 31-29, 30-21 loss to No. 5 seed Fresno Pacific earlier in the day.

Against Loyola, the Lancers jumped out to an early 9-4 lead thanks to three kills from senior Jamie Gill. Loyola scored the next four points to creep back into the game and only trailed 20-19, but Grace was too strong. The Lancers closed with a 10-4 run as Kristin Miller had a pair of aces and Dawn Harper added another.

In game two, Grace went ahead 8-2 and never looked back. The Lancers had five aces in the game and dominated the Wolfpack.

Loyola was the aggressor early in game three and led Grace 21-16. However, after a Grace point cut the lead to four points, Courtney Huyser served 11 consecutive points to clinch the match.

In the other game Thursday, the Grace College volleyball put together a strong showing, but lost to No. 5 seed Fresno Pacific 30-18, 31-29, 30-21 at the NAIA National Tournament at Palm Beach Atlantic College.

After losing the first game, the Lancers put together a strong game two. Grace led 15-10 midway through the game and held onto a 28-26 lead late.

After two Fresno Pacific points, the Lancers scored again to take a 29-28 advantage. However, Grace could not score again and Fresno Pacific got the win.

In the third game, Grace led 16-15 but made a number of serving errors down the stretch and lost.

Grace (27-13) will finish pool play Friday against Southern Oregon. The Lancers would need a three-game sweep over Southern Oregon and a pair of losses by Fresno Pacific to advance to the quarterfinals. [[In-content Ad]]
