NORTH MANCHESTER - A sign taped to the upstairs railing at Friday's Manchester/North Miami boys basketball game said it all.

The sign simply read, "Let the Games Begin."

And after nearly two weeks of inclement weather and numerous cancellations and postponements, the games did begin, and the Squires started the new year the same way they ended the previous year, with an impressive win.

Led by Eric Swan's 21 points and another 17 from Rex Reimer, the Squires topped the Warriors 62-37, upping their record to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Three Rivers Conference. North Miami fell to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the TRC. Kenny Hanson led the Warriors with 28 points and six rebounds.

The rest of the North Miami roster produced nine points.

"The Hanson boy was tough for us to handle," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "He scored a lot, but I think he had to work for them."

Reimer put the Squires on the board first with a 25-foot jumpshot, and Manchester was on its way to starting the game with a 9-0 run. Hanson scored seven of his game-high total in the opening frame to pull the Warriors to within four, 11-7, after one quarter of play.

Hanson's first two points came with 2:25 remaining in the first quarter. Manchester's defensive intensity showed no signs of a two-week layoff.

"I thought we had some realnice defensive efforts," said Goshert.

But Manchester's defensive efforts were overshadowed in the second stanza as Hanson brought the Warriors back. At the 2:25 mark of the opening quarter until the 4:22 mark of the second frame, North Miami went on a 16-2 run to knot things at 16. But the Squires came back to outscore their conference rivals 7-2 in the waning minutes of the first half to take a 23-18 lead at the intermission.

"I was pretty pleased with only having 10 turnovers, out defensive effort and the flurry at the end of the half was a big plus for us," said Goshert. "We didn't hit the hoop well but we put the ball in position. At the half we said we had to continue to move the ball, execute, and make a better effort of getting to the boards. In the second half we got 10 offensive rebounds."

Hanson opened up the scoring in the third frame with two free throws to cut Manchester's lead to three, but the Squires opened up the offense in the second half, outscoring North Miami 30-19 in the final 16 minutes of the game.

Swan mustered only two points in the first quarter but teamed with Reimer dictated the rest of the game.

"It make take him (Swan) a while," said Goshert. "It does take him a little bit to get started, but I thought we also got some good play from Rex, Michael (Hendrix), and (Chris) Betten did a good job of rebounding and (Steve) Fawcett was getting some deflections. We had a good effort defensively. We had some good bench support and that's always good. They all contributed in their own way."

Manchester's bench outscored North Miami's bench 15-3.

Manchester (8-1) will travel to Fort Wayne Dwenger tonight with the junior varsity contest set to tip off at 6:15.
