There are 287,00 children in Indiana living in poverty.

That is why Garner Wireman, 40, Goshen, came up with the idea to walk 145 miles and collect funds to reduce that statistic.

“The 287,000 children who live in poverty in the state is equivalent to the number of steps I will be taking from Goshen to Indianapolis,” Wireman said.

Wireman began his six-day 145-mile walk from Goshen to Indianapolis Monday.

He said since he started his walk Monday he had five people ask if he needed a ride during the heavy rain Monday, but he explained his walk and declined a ride.

He carries a backpack with water and food and will stay at homeless shelters along the way.

“As a community and state I think we need to not rely so much on government and rely on churches and community members to give back,” Wireman said.

He trained for his journey the past 16 weeks by walking five days a week. He walked three miles during the week and 15 to 20 miles on the weekends.

Wireman said he submitted a proclamation to Governor Mitch Daniels to raise awareness about poverty. Daniels signed the proclamation and this week is 287,000 Steps Against Poverty Week.

Wireman arrived in Warsaw Monday night, and stayed at Fellowship Mission’s transitional home on Buffalo Street for homeless men Monday night and left Tuesday for Rochester.

He met the 12 men who were staying at the shelter Monday night.

He also met with Eric Lane, Fellowship Missions director, to learn about the shelter and ways he could help.

Wireman said he hopes to donate some of the funds he raises along the walk to Fellowship Missions. The organization is scheduled to open the end of December or beginning of January at the former Tri-Namic building in Warsaw.

The permanent homeless shelter will house homeless men, women, and children.

He went to Rochester Tuesday and Peru today.

On Thursday, he will go to Kokomo and stay the night at Kokomo Rescue Mission, and on Friday he will go to Westfield and he will arrive in Indianapolis Saturday.

He plans to arrive in Indianapolis Saturday at 2 p.m. at the soldier monument in the center of the city when his wife, Angie, will pick him up and drive him back to Goshen Sunday.

He has raised $3,000 so far from friends, coworkers, and families.

The money will go towards purchasing clothing, food and water bottles that will be distributed to missions and shelters throughout Indiana through his partnership with United Way of Elkhart County.

Wireman said he founded an online store, one4one, a year ago. The organization sells shirts, water bottles, and canvas bags. For every item the for-profit organization sells, they donate an item to a child in need through United Way.

The organization’s mission is to help those in need.

Wireman also works at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center, Elkhart County, a community mental health center, and manages adult housing there.
