GOSHEN - After his first two attempts, it was unclear if Warsaw senior J.W. Maierle would qualify for the finals in the long jump at Thursday's Goshen Sectional.

He qualified for the finals with his third and final attempt, putting scratches on his first two jumps behind him, and then came out of the finals as the sectional champion.

"I scratched on my first two jumps," said Maierle, who entered Thursday's competition as the No. 1 seed. "I felt like I was in elementary school, I kept looking at the board. On the third jump I put it all together for a good jump."

On his second of three jumps in the finals, Maierle leaped 21 feet, 9.5 inches, a distance good enough to win the sectional championship by nine inches.

Maierle, who later anchored the winning 400 relay team for the Tigers, said the cold and wind had an effect on the competition.

"It was tough," Maierle said of the wind and dropping temperatures. "A week ago it was 70 degrees. That's why they say if you don't like the weather in Indiana just wait, it'll change."

On Maierle's final attempt of the finals, he put together a leap of 22-6, which he said was an inch off the school record. Unfortunately, he scratched and the attempt didn't count.

Obviously excited for his senior athlete, Warsaw coach David Hoffert said he thinks Maierle is close to doing some really great things.

"I think he can go further than that," Hoffert said of Maierle's 21-9.5 leap. "I think he has a legitimate shot toward the school record."

Maierle was the only Warsaw or Wawasee competitor to win an individual sectional championship Thursday.

Maierle teamed with Dan Kamholz, Chas Simpson and Ben Truman to win the 400 relay in a time of 43.44 seconds. The foursome from Elkhart Memorial finished second with a time of 43.51 seconds.

The only other sectional championship for local competitors came in the 3200 relay, where Wawasee's Eric Brown, Ryan Smythe, Ryan McDonald and Jared Wurtzel won with a time of 8:05.

With the top four individuals or teams in each event, as well as those who make a set time, distance or height, qualifying for Thursday's regional in Fort Wayne, Warsaw's 3200 relay team also advanced.

The Tiger foursome of Baxter Burnworth, Matt Campbell, Kyle McNulty and Alph Eherenman finished fourth in a time of 8:16.54.

"Matt Campbell did an incredible job," said Hoffert. "I'm really happy the 4x8 relay team made it out. Kyle McNulty and Baxter Burnworth are both seniors that were willing to step up. The times in the 4x8 with Wawasee and Elkhart Memorial were incredible. Those are some of the best times in the state."

While a number of local individuals finished in the top four and advanced to regional competition, Elkhart Memorial ran away with the sectional championship as a team.

The Crimson Chargers, who took first in seven of the 16 events, won with 178 points.

Wawasee finished a distant second with 78.5 points, followed in the 11-team field by Fairfield (74), Warsaw (71), Elkhart Central (62), Northridge (50), NorthWood (36), Concord (33.5), Goshen (29), Jimtown (9) and Howe Military (2).

Both Warsaw and Wawasee advanced to the regional in seven events.

Tiger sophomore Leonard Wells finished second in the discus and third in the shot put, while David Spangle was third in the high jump, Matt Campbell was fourth in the 1600 and the 1600 relay team of Stephen Wright, Kamholz, Simpson and Truman finished fourth.

For Wawasee, Eric Brown was second in the 400, while Tom Brown was second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles.

Both Browns teamed with Andrew Mock and McDonald to finish second in the 1600 relay.

Jordan Cunningham finished fourth in the high jump for Wawasee.

Note - the top four individuals or relay teams in each event, as well as those who meet a standard time, distance or height, advance to Thursday's Wayne Regional.
