Madison, Washington Win Elementary Championships

Hoosier Hysteria was in full swing at the elementary championship Tuesday evening at the Tiger Den.
Madison won the boys title, while the girls title was grabbed by Washington. The parking lot was packed, and fans jammed the lower levels.
The Madison boys completed an undefeated season with a fly-paper defense and a powerful scoring tandem in Michael Wienhorst and Michael Moore. In the tournament, the Cardinals made their way to the finals by defeating Washington in game one, 30-16. In the next game, Madison defeated Claypool 42-39. Then Silver Lake fell to the Cardinals by a 38-23 score.
Eisenhower showed the strength of a solid basketball program in that both the girls team and the boys team appeared in the finals.Ê However, the championship was a "father/daughter sweep" for coach Jerry Ryman of Madison and his daughter, Nicole Ryman, who coached the girls' champs of Washington.
Boys: Madison 37 Eisenhower 33
The first quarter was neck and neck, ending with the score tied at eight each. At the half, Madison was on top by one point, 20-19. The Cardinals came out of the locker room juiced and added slightly to the lead, taking the score to 31-27 to lead by four. The outcome would be still up for grabs coming down to the final seconds.
With 1:20 on the clock, Madison was up 35-33. Then this elementary team moved into a modified Iowa offense and, with careful discipline, ran the clock down to less than 20 seconds. An Eisenhower defender made a move and cleanly tied up Madison point guard Michael Moore with 15 seconds on the clock.
The possession went to Eisenhower, but on the inbound pass, there was a timeline violation, turning the ball back to Madison with 13 seconds.
Wienhorst took the inbound pass and dribbled clear of defenders until he was fouled with three seconds remaining. His first free throw bounced on the front of the rim and then rolled in. He swished the second to seal the game, and Madison had its championship.
Trevor Reinholt led the Eisenhower Eagles with 22 points, scoring outside, inside and at the free-throw line. Twice he was inches away from hitting a high school three pointer. Nelson Conley put in 10, and Thomas Balestri added one for the Eagles.
For the Cardinals, Wienhorst had 14, and Cody Heisler had 13 on feeds from Moore, who had six. Benji Rice added three, and David Dominguez had one for the winning Cardinals.Ê
Girls: Washington 30
Eisenhower 27 (1 OT)
Nicole Ryman's Washington girls won three tournament games en route to
the tough championship game.Ê In the opening game the Washington Hornets
trounced Madison 33-14, then they edged out Claypool 18-16 and in the
semi-final they defeated Sacred Heart 27-20.
The Championship game went to Overtime.Ê Washington held control,
winning the first quarter 5-4, and leading at the half 13-8.Ê Eisenhower
came out in the third quarter and started working their way back and
outscoring the Hornets in the second half with an amazing fourth quarter
effort to tie up the score.Ê In the fourth quarter the Eagles outscored the Hornets by 9-6 score to tie the game at the end of regulation.
With just over a minute and a half remaining in OT, the Eagles were on top 25-24.Ê A foul put Washington's Kara Mayer on the line where she nailed both shots moving the Hornets back in the lead 26-25.Ê After the Hornets grabbed the rebound on a missed shot at the Eisenhower end of the Court, Washington settled into a disciplined Iowa offense and ate up a minute of clock.Ê At twenty seconds Angele Marandet was put on the line for Washington to take the score to.Ê She hit her first toss to put the Hornets ahead by two, 27-25.Ê Pandemonium broke out as she missed her second shot and the rebound battle ended in a jump ball with possession going to Eisenhower.
Eisenhower then headed to the basket and Julie Seiss was fouled in the act of shooting.Ê She nailed her two free throws to tie the score at 27-27 with thirteen seconds remaining.
Washington brought the ball back across the timeline and Ashley Harrison
was sent to the line with seven seconds on the clock.Ê She hit her first shot but missed her second toss.Ê However Rebeka Reichard grabbed the rebound for Washington and put it back up and in to put the Hornets up by three.
Eisenhower hustled back to their end but could not get the shot to fall
at buzzer and Washington came out the Champions.
Top scorers were Kara Mayer with nine for Washington and Julie Seiss with nine for Eisenhower.
Also scoring for Eisenhower were Rachel Braddock with seven, Tasia Smith with three, and four players with two each, Amy Lofquist, Jayde Rice, Klarissa Clark, , and Lauren Curran.ÊPlaying but not scoring were Krista Wilson, and Courtney Parker.Ê Other Eisenhower players include Hillary
