COLUMBIA CITY – Mabel V. Mabie, 88, Columbia City, died at 9:55 a.m. May 31, 2015, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City.
She was born March 20, 1927, to Benjamin H. and Elsie Blanche Schaaf Simmons. On Feb. 11, 1944, she married Lavon E. Barnie Mabie, who preceeded her in dead Oct. 30, 2002.
They lived in Ligonier for two years before moving to Columbia City in 1946. She was a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City, since February 2011.
Her formative years were spent in Columbia Township, Whitley County, and she attended Columbia City High School. For 10 years, she worked as a cook for Eddie and Beulah’s restaurant, Columbia City, and she worked for 15 years in the laundry department of Whitley County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of American Legion Post 98 Auxiliary and the VFW Post 1899 Auxillary, Columbia City.
Surviving are her son, Paul (and spouse Penny) Mabie, Columbia City; three grandsons: Jeff (and spouse Angie) Mabie, Columbia City; Jason (and spouse Karen) Mabie, Warsaw; Jimmy Mabie, Fort Wayne; a granddaughter, Stacy Tucker, Fort Wayne; 12 step-grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and four step-great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Paul, Ned, Charles, Everett, Joe and James Simmons; two sisters, Ruby Bird and Anna Crawford; and a daughter-in-law, Julie Scherer Mabie.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 207 N. Main St., Columbia City. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Calling is at noon Wednesday at the funeral home.
