Kylah Cook took the first step toward her goal of competitively showing horses during the Kosciusko County Fair this week.
The Warsaw 6-year-old, who was born with microcephaly and microphthalmia and has had prosthetic eyes since she was 2, showed a horse and calf Sunday and Monday through the Exploring 4-H program.
The horse she led in the arena was smaller than the ones she rides at The Magical Meadows, noted her mom, Amanda Cook, as Kylah was preparing for the cow show Monday afternoon. The dark brown cross-breed calf, Auggie, wasn’t any taller than she was.
“She was here at 7 a.m. She helped walk the cows, give them a bath and blow-dry them, then combed and hairsprayed them,” said her former preschool paraprofessional Tammi Wagoner, as Amanda was fixing Kylah’s own hair in a tight braid in back. “Kylah enjoyed cleaning and walking the cows. She kind of already knew what they were about.”
Kylah even got a good morning lick from Auggie, the girl added.
Wagoner’s daughter, Lucky Lads and Lasses 4-H member Madison, was helping Kylah show the calf she brought to the fair. Kylah only needs voice direction from Madison once she’s in the arena.
Madison guided Kylah through grooming Auggie before the show, taking her hands and showing her where to brush on its side. She felt around and announced she found a spot on its stomach that still needed brushing.
Her favorite part Sunday was weaving through the barrels with the horse, she remarked.
Almost 7, Kylah wants to keep showing animals through Exploring 4-H, which she can do for two more years before she’s old enough to join the full-fledged program.
“She had a really great time,” Amanda said. “That’s kind of all that matters, as long as she had fun.”[[In-content Ad]]
