COLUMBIA CITY: Lois E. Hammel, 76, of New Haven, and formerly of North Webster, died at 5:20 a.m. March 30, 2010, in Parkview Main Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Jan. 31, 1934, in El Paso, Texas, to Oda Erwin and Zola Iva Reeg Mitchell.

She graduated from Larwill High School in 1952. A career bookkeeper and tax preparer, she was Larwill Town Clerk for six years, Whitko School Corporation secretary in the early 1960s and the billing and payroll clerk for North Webster EMS until her retirement in 2004. In addition, to her full-time job, she was self-employed as a tax preparer and bookkeeper. Her memberships include Harvest Community Church, Larwill, and National Association of Tax Practitioners, Indiana Chapter.

Surviving are a daughter, Kay Ann Porter, North Webster; two sons, Roger E. Porter, New Haven, and Ronald E. Porter, Wapakoneta, Ohio; three granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard (and spouse Sue Ann) Mitchell, North Webster, and Erwin "Pete" (and spouse Clara) Mitchell, Larwill; and a half sister, Daisy Cripe, Florida. She was preceded in death by a brother and her stepfather.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Larwill.

Calling is from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
