BREMEN - Coaches often use the term survive and advance during the postseason, but Warsaw's girls track team did more than survive in Tuesday's Bremen Regional.

The Tigers, who finished runner-up to Elkhart Central by just six points in last week's sectional, advanced competitors to the state finals in five events and were just six points away from winning the regional team championship at Bremen High School.

The Tigers came away with four second-place finishes and a third-place finish Tuesday, finishing third in the team standings with 51 points.

Much like at the sectional, Warsaw coach Scott Erba said the goal in Tuesday's regional was to advance a number competitors to the state finals.

If that happened, team points would take care of themselves.

Again he was right, and again his Tigers were right in the thick of things.

Elkhart Central won the team championship with 56 points, followed by Northridge (52), Warsaw (51), South Bend Riley (47), Penn (46) and Culver Academy (41) in the top six.

"We were right in the mix of it," said Erba. "Our goal was to get two relays and two girls to state and we did that. We also got some great performances from other girls who moved up to get us close."

There were 35 teams that scored at least one point in the regional meet.

Wawasee, which saw senior Jessie Spearman advance to the state meet in two events, scored 24 points to finish 11th.

Manchester, Triton and Whitko were represented in Tuesday's regional but did not score any points.

The top three individuals or teams in each event, as well as those who met a set time, distance or height, advanced to the June 2 state finals at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Warsaw advanced to state with second-place finishes in both the 400 relay and 1600 relay.

The Tiger foursome of Tiffany Shepherd, Rachel Voorhorst, Mercedes Plummer and Karrie Burch took runner-up honors in a time of 49.42 seconds.

In the 1600 relay, the final event of the meeting and one of the most exciting races of the meet, Lauren Pridgen, Kim Clay, Katie Furnivall and Julie Seiss finished second in a time of 3:59.49.

Elkhart Central won the 1600 relay in a time of 3:59.36.

"It was a range of emotions we went through leg by leg," Erba said of the 1600 relay. "Some of the other teams would take off and we'd run them down. We went from feeling great as Julie Seiss took the baton and in the first 100 meters she was in third and fourth place was coming quick. Seiss had a tremendous last 200. There were so many lead changes. We came back and passed the Elkhart Central girl and both got by the girl from South Bend Riley. It was a great race."

Warsaw's 1600 relay team is seeded fourth for the state finals.

Seiss advanced to state in the 800 with a runner-up time of 2:18.48, two seconds behind regional champion Mary Catherin Quiett from Marian.

Other Warsaw athletes to advance as individuals included Burch and Plummer.

Burch was second in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.58 seconds while Plummer was third in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.15 seconds.

"Karrie ran great," Erba said "She ran one of her lifetime best times. She ran a 12.44 in the prelims of the 100. The school record is 12.4. So we need to go check and see if it's 12.40 or 12.4 something. Mercedes ran a great time, one of her fastest times of the year. They've had the mindset this year that they were going to state and now they are."

For Wawasee, Spearman finished second in the 200 in a time of 26.09 seconds and third in the 100 in a time of 12.61 seconds.
