Locals Fare Well At Record-Setting Girls State Finals

INDIANAPOLIS - Considering they were swimming in an IHSAA state girls swimming finals that saw 10 records broken in 12 events, local competitors had a pretty good showing Saturday afternoon at IUPUI in Indianapolis.
While the Carmel girls swim team was winning its 27th-straight state championship, the Warsaw and Wawasee swim teams also had something to cheer about.
Finishing 14th overall, the 10th-ranked Wawasee Lady Warriors were highlighted by junior Breanna Robinson, who finished second in both the 100 fly and 100 back.
In the 100 fly, Robinson was the runner-up to Crown Point junior Aly Tetzloff's state record time of 52.70, finishing in 53.77.
Then, in the 100 back, Robinson's time of 53.96 was impressive, but was second to Carmel sophomore Claire Adams' record-setting time of 52.97, which was announced as the second-fastest time in the nation.
Despite losing out on state championships, Robinson was more than pleased with her times.
"Of course I'm not upset with two lifetime bests and second in both of my events," she said. "I'm very happy.
"The competition here is insane this year," she added. "Just competing with the girls is amazing."
According to Wawasee coach Julie Robinson, the fast state meet is a result of top-quality swimmers entering the field at the same time.
"I think you're seeing an amazing number of kids coming in," she said. "As those kids are coming in, the training is getting harder, because as you train with those kids everyday, it just kind of bumps everybody up."
And despite her daughter competing against the second-best time in the entire country, Julie Robinson feels Breanna Robinson can compete with Adams on any given day.
"On another day, who knows?," Julie Robinson said. "Bre is going faster than she ever has before, but her walls were off. If she led the first 50 (yards), I don't know. If it came down to them racing again, who knows who would win?"
In the 100 back, Robinson and Adams were actually neck-and-neck going into the final 25 yards, but Adams' length proved to be too much down the stretch.
"If she could reach back and fix the walls, I think that would be the perfect race for her," Julie Robinson said. "Her ultimate goal was to come down here and go 53 (seconds) in both the fly and the back. So, it was really about times. She's really focused on college and where she's going. She knew those were the kinds of times for those colleges to see."
As far as attracting college attention, Breanna Robinson feels she did her job, especially after she finished third in the 100 free as a freshman and sophomore, as well as second in the 200 free as a freshman and third last year.
"I feel like I did my job and they know that," she said of any collegiate scouts.
Robinson also anchored Wawasee's 400 free relay, pulling the team of junior Kendra Miller, sophomore Kayla Hershberger and freshman Paige Miller from 16th place to 14th.
Paige Miller also competed in the 200 IM and 500 free, finishing 15th and 16th, respectively.
"I thought Paige did real well," Julie Robinson said. "She came down here, and I don't know if she's fighting a bug, but she felt tired the whole time. I think a lot of it is nerves. Emotionally, it's very difficult to come down here, especially when you have this many kids going so fast. The pressure that is on them is so intense. I thought she did really well. I think she'll come back next year a different girl and we'll see something different out of her."
Another area freshman at the meet was Warsaw's Brenna Morgan, who finished 15th in the 50 free, but really got her coaches excited by winning the consolation heat of the 100 free in a school record time of 51.64.
"She just took it off fast tried her best not to slow down," Warsaw coach Nathan Long said of Morgan's 100 free performance. "That's about the best way to say it. In warmups, we were telling her to really focus on her breakouts - 'Fast strokes from your breakouts on.' I think she really applied that in that race."
And Morgan agreed.
"Between last night and this morning, I worked on (my breakouts) quite a bit," she said. "I think that's what really helped."
Her 51.64 time was actually the eighth best of the day, but because she was competing in the consolation heat, ninth was the best she could do.
Regardless, the effort will going a long way in her motivation for next season.
"I'm really excited for next year, to see what can happen," she said.
While all the local swimmers at the meet will be back in action next season, so to will be most of the individual girls that set state records.
"The girls in Indiana are insane," Breanna Robinson said. "Colleges have noticed it, athletes have noticed it, coaches have noticed it - everybody has noticed it."

Understanding Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) And Using Them
Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
