Patricia Coy, executive director, announced United Way of Kosciusko County has successfully completed all of United Way's national membership requirements by their respective due dates.
The annual certification process includes completing the membership requirements certification, membership investment to support the national office, and a survey of total resources generated.[[In-content Ad]]"The membership requirements must be certified annually in order for us to remain a member of United Way," Coy said. "It is important for us to maintain high standards of accountability, and this is part of the process to confirm that our operations are transparent and meet or exceed United Way membership requirements."
The certification mandates completion of 13 requirements for United Way membership along with verification of the status of 47 indicators that a United Way demonstrates the intent of the membership requirements.
"All United Ways must meet the highest standards and verify on paper that they have conformed to the requirements of membership in the United Way system," said Brian Gallagher, president and CEO, United Way of America. "We applaud United Way of Kosciusko County's commitment to accountability and, importantly, their continued efforts to support work in their community which improves lives and advances the common good for all people."
Activities are underway for the United Way of Kosciusko County 2009 Campaign. These activities include establishing the financial goal for this year's campaign, identifying the Pacesetters for the campaign, and conducting the training for United Way Volunteer Consultants calling on businesses and Key Leaders running campaigns at the local businesses.
The goal for this year's United Way of Kosciusko County campaign is $1.925 million. While large on the surface and higher than the nearly $1.8 million raised last year, this goal still only represents a fraction of the nearly $8 million potentially available dollars across Kosciusko County if everyone were to participate at the "Champions Club" level by donating one hour's pay per month.
"Given the challenging economic times we're faced with, we certainly don't expect this to be the year we reach our full potential, but we do know we live in a very 'giving community' that responds to needs of others," said Bob Vitoux, 2009 cabinet chairman. "Consequently, we expect to reach our goal by encouraging more people to give by educating them that no gift is too small and how nearly 90 cents of every dollar given goes back out in the areas of education, income/self-sufficiency and health to meet the ever-increasing needs in our our community."
The Pacesetters for this year's campaign include Anytime Fitness, Biomet, DePuy, Medtronic and Orthopediatrics.
Pacesetter companies will be running their employee campaigns in August and have committed to strive for at least a 10-percent increase in their prior year donation. Biomet, DePuy and Medtronic are companies that have had great success for United Way in the past.
Each company has identified a Key Leader and put together a team who will be running a campaign for their co-workers in an effort to encourage all to give generously.
The local Anytime Fitness organization is a first-time campaign participant and a unique Pacesetter company. Instead of an employee campaign, they will give $25 to United Way of Kosciusko County for every new member that joins the gym in August.
In addition to the Pacesetter company activities, the annual dodge ball event, sponsored by The Bowen Center, is scheduled for Aug. 13 with all proceeds going to United Way.
Final preparations are being made for this year's Day of Caring, scheduled for Aug. 26. It is an annual one-day event where volunteers go out into our communities and work to make a difference in the life of one of their neighbors.
In 2008, the Day of Caring completed 103 projects in 11 communities in the county, with the help of more than 550 volunteers. The work is done on single-dwelling homes primarily helping low income, elderly and those with disabilities. The projects range in type of work from simple yard work, painting, construction projects such as roofing, siding and cement work.
Applications to volunteer will be accepted through Aug. 14. Contact United Way at 574-269-2592 if interested.
