Haney, 43, a Republican, Leesburg, is a general surgeon at Kosciusko Community Hospital.
Filing for the May 2 primary begins Wednesday. The general election is Nov. 2.
Haney will run in the primary against Republican senator candidates Marlin Stutzman, Richard Behney, John Hostettler and Don Bates Jr.[[In-content Ad]]He announced his intent to run Saturday at the Michiana 912 Headquarters in Elkhart.
He has been working the past two weeks to get voter signatures.
He said he is running because he does not agree with the government's excess spending, increases in taxation and the health care bill. He said he would like to see bills passed that reduce health care spending, and said the government is the biggest problem in health care spending.
In 2000, he was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
At the end of 2008, with the downturn in the local economy, nationwide financial pressures, and need for more family time, he closed his practice in Marion and relocated to Kosciusko County. He joined a group practice with special interest in minimally invasive surgery and endoscopy.
With the death of his senior partner, Dr. Neal VanNess, in December 2009, Haney assumed leadership of the Kosciusko County Medical Society.
Haney said over the last three years, he has become increasingly concerned about the health care crisis.
He said he supports tort reform and increased competition by allowing insurance companies to write policies across state lines. He said he is opposed to socialized medicine.
Haney graduated in 1984 from Marion High School.
He attended Marion College, now Indiana Wesleyan, where he served as student government senator and vice president.
After graduating summa cum laude in 1988 with degrees in political science, biology and chemistry, he continued his studies at Indiana University School of Medicine where he earned his doctorate of medicine in 1992.
The next year, Haney interned at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated in 1997 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine's General Surgery Residency Program.
He joined a friend in a group practice in Middletown, Ohio, for two years before relocating his practice to his hometown, Marion.
While at Marion General Hospital, Haney started his own solo practice, served as chief assistant surgeon for eight years, and served as Grant County Medical Society senior leadership for four years.
Haney and his wife, Rebecca, live in Leesburg with their four children: Grant, Olivia, Garrett and Grason.
