Local Scouts Assist In Order Of The Arrow Ceremony
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
Lincolnway District is made up of Scouts in Kosciusko and Whitley counties. Each March, Order of the Arrow members travel to each troop in the district and hold elections for new members.
To be eligible, Boy Scouts must have achieved the First Class Rank, have at least 15 nights of scout camping with one long-term camping experience, and then be elected by their peers with at least 50 percent of the vote. Adult members must meet the same camping requirements and be chosen by the troop’s adult staff and only one adult in the troop may be elected annually.
On Saturday evening of the Camporee, all of the Boy Scouts and the adult leaders formed a single line and were led from the campsite area to a remote spot for the “Call Out” ceremony. There the Order of the Arrow Ceremony Team members, dressed in Indian-style outfits, conducted the solemn ceremony.
On that night those who were on the ballot in March find out which ones were chosen to become members of the Order. As the ceremony team walks around the circle, of Scouts and Scouters (adults), an arrow is placed at the feet of the elected Scouts or Scouters.
They are then pulled from the circle and in turn given an arrow which signifies that they have been chosen. When the ceremony has been concluded the newly elected candidates are informed that this is only the first step.
Next, they should spend the rest of the evening and night in silence to reflect on the ideals of Scouting. Then, they still must go to the Council's camp at Chief Little Turtle to participate in an Order of the Arrow Ordeal Ceremony within the next several months before they can become actual members.
