Bob Harkness, Winona Lake resident and a volunteer with the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross, is leaving this morning for Orlando, Fla., to assist with Hurricane Gustav evacuee relief efforts.
Harkness, a retired Wa-Nee Schools teacher, assisted with Nappanee tornado clean-up efforts last year, but said this is his first time for assisting with relief efforts outside of Indiana.
"I'm anxious to get to Florida and can't imagine what its like to have to not know what they will come back to and if they will come back to their homes," Harkness said during a telephone interview Friday afternoon.
In addition to Harkness, Gene and Beverly Minton, North Webster, left Aug. 28 for Louisiana to prepare shelters for evacuees, and Randy Schmucker and Mike Hollar, both of Warsaw, left Wednesday for Baton Rouge, La., to also assist evacuees.
All of the volunteers have been trained to assist evacuees.
Larry Peppel, executive director of the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said residents in Kosciusko County can donate to assist evacuees.
Peppel said there were still thousands of Louisiana residents without power Thursday and the Red Cross projects to spend $1 million in assisting the evacuees with food and shelter.
The Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking funds that will provide shelter, food, cots, toiletries, first aid and counseling services for evacuees. People can donate to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund.
The American Red Cross has nearly 500 shelters in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas to assist evacuees.
People can donate to the relief fund by mailing donations to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.
People also can drop off or mail financial donations to the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 320 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw, IN 46580. Make checks out to: National Disaster Relief Fund.
People also can donate online at www.redcross.org
