Local Red Cross Meets Goals For Tsunami Relief

American Red Cross reportedly has received enough funds to accomplish its short- and long-range goals for the tsunami relief effort.
Approximately $1.2 billion in U.S. dollars was raised from the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies for the effort. Of that amount, $236.2 million came from the American public, foundation and corporate supporters.
Larry Peppel, Kosciusko County chapter of the American Red Cross executive director, said Monday the Red Cross will continue to accept funds for the relief. However, beginning today, money donated to the International Response Fund will be opened to all disasters in the world. For the past month, those funds were provided to the tsunami relief effort.
Donations to the tsunami relief effort in Kosciusko County totaled approximately $20,000. "The real message is we're very grateful for the support from Kosciusko County," said Peppel.
The local Red Cross chapter still will accept money for the tsunami relief, he said, but "our local chapter still has ongoing needs."
When the Red Cross raises enough funds to implement comprehensive relief plans for a particular disaster, they notify the public. Peppel said that is part of their commitment to donors.
The Red Cross' two-phased assistance plan calls for specialized relief immediately and over the long term in five areas: food and safe water; healthcare and disease prevention; immediate family supplies; mental health counseling; and disaster preparedness and prevention measures. Initial relief efforts focused on getting lifesaving help into the hands of survivors by distributing emergency food, drinking water, tents, blankets, mosquito nets, kitchen sets and family hygiene kits.
Relief experts have been deployed to Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia to assist with the efforts.
