SOUTH BEND -ÊWarsaw's Glenn Nichols, 50, has missed one Notre Dame football game in the last 11 years, including home games, away games, bowl games and games played in places like Ireland and Hawaii.
Now Nichols has coached Notre Dame's football team as well.
Nichols served as the honorary coach for Notre Dame's "Blue" team - the offense -Êin the April 29 Blue and Gold intrasquad game. Mike Leep Jr. of Gurley Leep in South Bend coached the "Gold" team.
"I received the honor through an auction for the homeless shelter in South Bend," Nichols said.
As honorary coach, Nichols prowled the sideline with head coach Bob Davie and listened to plays and strategy. He attended all team meetings, and before the game, he had the opportunity to speak to the team.
"I shared with them an experience from a few years ago," Nichols said. "Back in 1991 when they played the University of Tennessee, I went with a good friend, Vic McMahon. He had an aneurysm on the brain right there and died."
Asked how he became a Notre Dame fan, Nichols, who was born in Roanoke, Va., and moved to Warsaw in 1968, said, "I've just always been one."
Nichols resides in Warsaw and has owned the Ryder Truck Rental Agency in Warsaw for the last 15 years. [[In-content Ad]]
