Local Foundation Featured In USA Today

By DAVID SLONE, Times-Union Staff Writer-

Out of all the community foundations in the country and the 81 in Indiana alone, a USA Today writer chose the Kosciusko County Community Foundation for an article in Friday's issue.

The article, titled "Yes, you can start your own charitable foundation," by John Waggoner, briefly quotes Foundation Executive Director Suzanne Light.

The paragraph in the USA Today article states, "Indiana's Kosciusko County Community Foundation, for example, will let you start an endowment for $5,000. The county (population 76,072), has more than 200 funds and $27 million in assets, according to Suzanne Light, the foundation's executive director."

Friday afternoon, Light said of the call and interview, "I was very surprised, but the gentleman knew about Winona Lake, about Billy Sunday. We had a lovely discussion. It was a fun interview."

The timing of the article couldn't be better for the The Kosciusko County Community Foundation, which just launched its new Web site June 23. The newspaper writer called Light at the Foundation the following Tuesday.

Light said the reporter had been looking at foundation Web sites and happened upon several, including Kosciusko County's. The reporter mentioned to Light that Utah had just one foundation covering the whole state. Why the reporter chose Kosciusko's Foundation, Light guessed, was either the new Web site or maybe because he has family from Indiana.

The Foundation's new Web site is part of a whole effort called "Sustaining Resources Development." Along with the new Web site, the Foundation also has a new logo and a new tagline, "Where Donors' Dreams Shine." The new Web site has been planned for the past six months, Light said.

The Web site also now allows people to sign up for the Foundation's e-newsletter, which will be released quarterly in 2007. In 2008, the plans are to release an e-newsletter monthly.

But aside from the national exposure and the new ways of promoting the Foundation, the work of the Foundation is what's important, said Light.

"The exciting thing is it's good work and work that needs to be done in our community," she said.
