Local Doctor Headed To Mississippi

Kosciusko Family Healthcare, P.C. announced today that Marilyn Whitney, M.D., Warsaw, will serve as clinical leader of the third medical team Indiana is sending to Mississippi as an official part of Operation Hoosier Relief. The Indiana State Department of Health and Indiana Department of Homeland Security sent Whitney through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact Indiana has with Mississippi. She left this morning and expects to be in the disaster area for approximately two weeks.

Whitney is a family practice physician and partner of Kosciusko Family Healthcare. She has extensive training and experience in disaster response.

Dr. Whitney was a member of the former Northeastern Indiana/Allen County Medical Response Team. Her disaster response experience includes working with a group serving the U.S. Virgin Islands after Hurricane Marilyn struck.

Whitney probably will serve with OHR at several clinic sites and provide door-to-door care to people who are unable to leave their homes and shelters.

Part of Whitney's role may be restoration of the local health system. Most of the Biloxi, Miss., doctor's offices no longer exist.

In addition to government and private-sector medical professionals like Dr. Whitney, OHR's team includes mental health professionals, representatives of Indiana State Police, local police departments, Indiana National Guard, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Department of Transportation, Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Department of Homeland Security and other state government agencies.
