Branden Sowers will bike more than 3,900 miles this summer in 63 days from Seattle, Wash., to Washington, D.C..

The trip is to raise funds to provide activities for those with disabilities.

On June 3, Sowers will join with more than 85 other Pi Kappa Phi fraternity members from across the U.S. for the journey. The ride will begin in Seattle, Wash., and end Aug. 13 on the capital lawn in Washington, D.C.

The trip is being organized by Push America, which was founded by Pi Kappa Phi fraternity in 1977. The trip is titled "Journey Of Hope."

Push America is the national philanthropy of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, whose mission is to raise funds and awareness on behalf of people with disabilities.

Sowers, 19, a sophomore at Purdue University, is a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and is a hospitality and tourism management major.

A 2009 Warsaw Community High School graduate, he is the son of Carl and Laura Sowers.

On the journey, he plans to work with other Pi Kappa members traveling with him to put on puppet shows and special events to send a message of acceptance and understanding of people with disabilities.

Sowers has been involved with Push America since joining Pi Kappa Phi last spring.

Since last fall, he has volunteered at Lafayette Jeff High School with his fraternity spending time with special needs students in the classroom.

Every other week he and his fraternity have participated in activities with the special needs students at the high school.

"Those with disabilities have taught me to not take life for granted, and they always put a smile on my face and to see smiles on their faces is priceless," Sowers said.

He has raised more than $500 for his trip, and his goal is to raise $7,500 by the end of April so he has his goal met in May in support of Push America.

The funds will assist with financing of activities Sowers will put on with the other fraternity members to help those with disabilities.

"We will do friendship visits to those with disabilities and spend time with them and get to know them," Sowers said.

The group will stop at youth clubs and YMCAs and visit people with disabilities.

Sowers said he began raising funds the first week of January for the trip, and has received funds thus far from friends, family and local businesses and is seeking the community's financial support.
