Webinars To Focus On Low Impact Development

WINONA LAKE - The Lakes and Streams Leadership Network, sponsored by the Kosciusko Lakes and Streams program at Grace College and by the Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation, along with the Purdue Cooperative Extension, will host a two-part webinar series titled "Becoming a Rain Gardener" on April 2 and April 23.

The webinar focuses on Low Impact Development and is from JFNew, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and the Delta Institute.

Low Impact Development is an approach to development that takes steps to minimize impacts to the hydrologic cycle (particularly runoff and infiltration of water after a storm). When LID principles and practices are properly implemented, water can be managed in a way that reduces the impact of built areas, promotes the natural movement of water within an ecosystem, and minimizes pollutants in runoff. Applied on a broad scale, LID can maintain or restore important functions of water movement through lakes and streams.

The public is invited to view these presentations live at the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, 102 E. Market St., Warsaw, on April 2 and April 23 from 2 to 3 p.m. The events are free but limited to the first 28 people who register.

If you plan to attend, contact Eileen Boekestein at 574-372-5100, Ext. 6446, or e-mail [email protected]

Session 1 on April 2 will present the fundamentals of low impact development, including regional planning ideas, site assessment, design recommendations, and best management practices. Session 2 on April 23 will deal with the challenges, opportunities, and benefits of LID.

Habitat For Humanity Groundbreaking

MENTONE - Partners, volunteers, sponsors and friends of Habitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County will gather Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Mentone to break ground on Habitat's latest effort in Kosciusko County.

The home's new owner, Jill Stutzman and her daughter will be present. The Stutzmans were selected by a family selection review committee of Habitat for Humanity of Kosciusko County. The public is invited to attend the ground-breaking at 516 N. Tucker St., Mentone.
