Local Boys Compete At Kokomo Regional

KOKOMO -Ê#Although they set personal records, several Manchester High School competitors left the Kokomo Regional a bit disappointed.
The Squire 400 relay team of Greg Lengel, Matt Barker, Caleb Clark and Nate Stoops set a personal record with a time of 43.96; however, they finished the race in fourth place overall. Since only the top three teams advance to the state finals June 5 in Bloomington, the Squires missed a state berth by less then two-tenths of a second. The team from South Bend St. Joseph's recorded a time of 43.79 to take third place.
"The 4X100 relay team got a PR. They PRed by six-tenths of a second," said Manchester coach Matt Barker. "They bettered their seed by two spots and their splits were excellent.
"The thing that is most difficult is being fourth. The top three advance, so that's hard. It would be much easier to place eighth than fourth."
Lengel also competed in the long jump and placed fourth in that event as well. Lengel cleared the bar at 6-feet-2 inches, but just missed his attempts at 6-4.
"Greg's second attempt at 6-2 was his best jump of the night," said coach Barker. "It was easily a 6-4 jump. I think when he got to 6-4, he put a lot of pressure on himself."
Although they are disappointed that they will not be competing in Bloomington next week, the Squires can still look to the future. And according to coach Barker, that future should be bright.
"Other than Sam McFadden, who competed in the long jump tonight, all the guys are back next year," said coach Barker. "They ran one heck of a race, but I know they are a little disappointed. But they are all back next year, and with another year of work they will be one of the top 4x100 teams in the state."
Manchester senior Sam McFadden finshed his long jump career at the regional with a leap of 18-8 1/2.
Stoops also competed in the 100 and finished with a time of 11.75. He did not advance to the finals.
Whitko junior Tyler Wilkinson is the only local competitor to advance to the state finals. He placed third overall in the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.25.
Wilkinson also knows what the Manchester runners are experiencing. He just missed making the state finals in the 110 hurdles, placing fourth overall with a time of 15 seconds flat.
Wilkinson teamed up with Kyle Mathias, Matt Tracy and Brandon Waterson to form Whitko's 400 relay team. The Wildcats finished in fifth place with a time of 44.81, just behind Three Rivers Conference foe Manchester.
Individually, Waterson competed in the 100 and 200 meter races. He ran the 100 with a time of 11.80 and the 200 with a time of 23.50. He did not make the finals in either event.
Tippecanoe Valley sent competitors to the Kokomo Regional in four events. The Viking 3200 relay team of Eric Whetstone, Ryan Anglin, Aaron Foster and Jesse Olson placed 15th overall with a time of 9:01.28.
Olson also ran the 1600, placing 11th overall with a time of 4:46.70.
Eric Cody, Valley's only double regional qualifier, competed in the both the discus and shot put competitions. He tossed the shot 46-2 for an 11th-place finish and hurled the discus 126-10 to finish in 13th place.
Triton sent Cory McClarnon and the 1600 relay team to Kokomo Thursday evening. McClarnon ran the 400 in 53.09 to place 13th, while Trent Furnivall, Benjamin Bell, Bryon Overmyer and McClarnon teamed up to run the 1600 relay in 3:36.10 to place 12th.
