Lnowledge to Go: Entries Needed for County Fair Open Class

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Joan Younce, Extension Coordinator-

The Kosciusko County Community Fair is just around the corner and many county residents are preparing exhibits for the open class divisions in the Home and Family Arts Building.

You still have some time to be thinking about what you would like to exhibit. Anyone in the county can make an entry. Be sure to look at the fair book before making your entries to make sure there is a category for it. Most things will be acceptable since we have several miscellaneous categories.

There are departments for baking, food preservation, needlework, fine arts, crafts, agriculture, herbs, flowers and plants and sewing. Entries will be accepted July 7 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Judging will follow but will be closed to the public.

The building will be open to the public  from 1 to 9 p.m. July 8.

Other fair days, the building will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Only non-perishable baked goods will be accepted in the baking area; no cream pies, no whipped cream toppings or raw egg items. Be sure to check the food safety guidelines in the fair book or phone 574-372-2340 for additional information.

A new category, weaving, has been added to the needlework section this year. They have six categories for weaving. One category is “my first project” which must be done on a loom and it needs to be a first project. Another category is “scarf or shawl.” This is a scarf woven on a loom out of any fiber. The “household item” category can be a table runner, towel, dishcloth, rug or any home item woven on a loom. People may also enter hand-spun wool yarns and hand-spun yards of other fibers. See the fair book for details.

Each class will have a first-, second- and third-place winner. Each department will have category champions and two departments will now have two Best of Shows. The committee has added a best of show in quilts and photography. The Best of Show awards are sponsored by local businesses.
