Merdena Lister and Dennis Darr were honored at the Annual Purdue Extension Meeting Monday at Center Lake Pavilion. The speaker was Dr. Carl Broady, state 4-H youth plan coordinator, who spoke on the centennial of 4-H in Indiana.

4-H began as boys' and girls' clubs in Ohio in 1902 and in Indiana in 1904. Originally, the clubs were associated with schools and the first clubs in Indiana were the Boys Corn Club and Girls Bread Club in Hamilton County.

By the 1960s, Indiana 4-H was sixth in the nation, with 90,000 members. In 1990, 4-H refocused its mission toward life skills. By 2003, 303,875 youth were reached through 4-H. Some of the more famous Indiana 4-H members were Jim Davis (Garfield creator), the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon, Orville Redenbacher, Earl Butz, Sen. Richard Lugar, Florence Henderson and David Letterman.

Lister, secretary and office manager of the Kosciusko Extension office, was honored for her 40 years of service. She said the biggest change over the years was the conversion to computers.

Darr was awarded the Friend of Extension Award, which recognizes an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. In addition, Darr was referred to as being quiet and one who doesn't seek attention for all he does. He started in Extension activities in 1965 and has served on the Beef Commission for six years.

Dan Hampton provided an update on Fair Board activities and the 2004 fair, which will be July 18-24. New this year will be daily bingo, monster trucks and other evening activities sponsored by the Fair Board.

Reports were given in their respective areas by Extension educators: Joan Younce, county Extension director, leadership and community development, consumer and family science and food and nutrition; Kelly Easterday, agriculture and natural resources; Tracy George, 4-H and youth development; and Brenda Eber, family nutrition program assistant.

Two board members are retiring after completing two terms - Marvene Johnson and John Powell. New board members elected were: Dennis Darr, Jane Greene, Steve Johnson, Louise Powell and Doug Shock.

Sponsors for the event were: 1st Source Bank, Clunette
