WINONA LAKE - The annual Lymphoma and Leukemia Society's Light The Night Walk is Sept. 18 at Rodeheaver Auditorium in Winona Lake.

Doors open at 5 p.m. A pre-walk celebration where Amy Allison, walk honoree, and Steve Miller, Kosciusko Community Hospital CEO, will speak will be at 7 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]The walk will begin at 7:30 p.m. where supporters will hold red balloons, blood cancer survivors will hold white balloons and those who know people who have suffered from blood cancers will carry gold balloons.

There are currently 30 teams registered for the walk, but more are needed to achieve Winona Lake's fundraising goal, according to Kate Butler, walk campaign coordinator

This year's goal is to raise $797,700 in Indiana and $66,000 in Winona Lake for blood cancer research.

Last year $50,000 was raised during the walk in Winona Lake.

Allison, 41, Columbia City, is Winona Lake's walk honoree. She has been employed at Biomet, Warsaw, for five years where she is a surgeon tour manager.

She was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in July 1997 at age 30 and is now in remission. Allison underwent treatments at Eisenhower Hospital in Savannah, Ga.

Her treatment was part of a study that included four years of chemo during which she lost her hair twice, several months of radiation and numerous spinal taps.

She was able to return home after two months in the hospital and continued treatment every day for a year and every other day for the following year.

"I would not be here if it were not for the prayers and financial support given by those who participate in these events," Allison said.

Dane Miller, walk chair, said he is happy Allison was selected to serve as walk chair.

"Kate is a wonderful lady who always has a great spirit, is friendly and is a great worker," Miller said.

Allison participated in last year's walk with her family and a team from Biomet. She will again participate in this year's walk and said she is looking forward to it.

"What I am really looking forward to is when we no longer have to have these events because that would mean we have found a cure," Allison said.

Allison will participate in the walk with her husband Scott and their 11-year-old daughter Shelby and a Biomet team.

People can sign up the night of the walk. Those who raise $100 will receive a free T-shirt.

People can register teams by calling Butler at 260-453-2525 or register online at www.lightthenight.org/in
