WINONA LAKE — Matt Light is ready to welcome in some of his cyclist friends for Fat & Skinny Tirefest 9 this weekend.
“There’s going to be guys coming in from Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin and just from all over the Midwest,” Light said.
The festival kicks off with a community mass ride from the Village of Winona to downtown Warsaw at 6:30 p.m. today.
Once downtown, there’ll be a BMX stunt show and trials demo at 7:15 p.m.
Racing begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with the mountain bike race on the Winona Lake Trails, followed by a road race at 1 p.m., beginning at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
The action continues Sunday with the criterium race around the island at the Village of Winona.
Some riders pick and choose different races, but for Light, it’s going to be a full weekend, taking part in each one.
“The mountain bike race, I want to have a good placing in, but mountain biking is a little tougher — in my opinion,” he said. “Then, for the road race, I just want to finish.”
Light’s speciality is the criterium, which is a race on short course and measured in laps.
“I’ve always been in the top 10 in that race,” Light said about his previous six Tirefest criterium races. “I really feel like I’ll win it this year.”
Cycling for Racing for Riley, formerly known as Alderfer Bergen, Light has been on a hot streak recently.
Concentrating on criteriums, Light finished third at the April 7 Marian University Midwest Cycling Classic, then second at the Mooresville Bike Challenge on April 15 and he most recently finished first at the I Love Goshen race on May 4.
Training 30 to 40 hours a week, Light's ambition is to become a professional cyclist, as he is currently a Category 2, with the highest being Category 1.
To reach that level, he knows he just needs to stay the course.
"I just need to keep doing what I'm doing," he said. "It's about eating and sleeping the sport. It's never going to get easier."
His next step is this weekend's home race in Winona.
"I'm excited," he said. "It's going to be fun."[[In-content Ad]]
