NORTH MANCHESTER - A lifeguarding class at the North Manchester Community Pool is scheduled for Feb. 23-24 and March 1-2.

The class is an American Red Cross Lifeguard Course.

The course teaches the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Students who want to attend the class must attend 32 hours of instruction and meet the following pre-requisites:

n Must be 15 years old by the end of the course, and must attend all sessions.

n Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards front crawl with rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick (rhythmic breathing can be performed to the side or front); 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence; 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of both.

n Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Course cost is $125 (fee waiver available, call Tracy or Julie for details), which includes CPR for the professional rescuer, preventing disease transmission, AED and First Aid and lifeguarding skills.

Dates and class times are: Feb. 23-24, March 1-2, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pool time is 8 to 11:30 a.m.; class time, 12:30 to 4 p.m.; pool time, 4 to 6 p.m. Meets at the North Manchester Community Pool.
