Lice Policy

I read the paper this week and was greatly encouraged that someone other than myself thinks the policy of Wawasee School District on lice is ridiculous.

Last year my two daughters missed two weeks of school due to this policy. After three outbreaks my girls required medical attention to treat them for lice. We had previously used over-the-counter remedies, but because the school continued to allow kids to attend school with lice rather than making them stay home, we made the decision at the prompting of our doctor to keep our girls home and try and break the cycle.

We spent a lot of money trying to rid our home of the problem. We were told by the principal of their school via email that it was the worst outbreak the school had ever had. I even called the county health department. I was told there was nothing they could do. I was outraged. The final straw was when I was sent a letter saying my girls missed too much school! Hello! It's the schools fault! My girls have never had lice until last year. We finally discovered a shampoo called Lice Shield and it works! We sent them back after their heads had healed and the cycle was somewhat over and we used Lice Shield every day. We started using it again this year to protect our girls.

I feel bad for parents who cannot afford lice remedies etc. But come on, why do the rest of us have to suffer? It's wrong ... it's just wrong. We didn't have the extra money either, but our kids’ health was important. We can't really afford shampoo at $9 dollars a bottle, but we do it.

Other people need to wake up when there's a problem of this magnitude and it's bugs! Let's say enough is enough. We parents whose kids get this from another child shouldn't suffer just because. Go back to the days of parents being responsible for their kids and taking care of your own and not make everyone suffer for one!
