By Staff Report-

On Feb. 24, Warsaw Library Director Ann Zydek, Associate Director Joni Brookins and Community Relations Assistant Kathy Stutzman traveled to Indianapolis to discuss library issues of concern with legislators on ILF Legislative Day.[[In-content Ad]]The day's agenda included a legislative update by Indiana Library Federation legislative advocates, a discussion of issues affecting the library community in the 2009 Indiana General Assembly, and the opportunity to eat lunch with state legislators.

Staff members met with Representatives Dave Wolkins and William C. Friend as well as Senator Marlin Stutzman, encouraging them to support a solution that will result in statewide success for all Indiana public libraries and the citizens they serve. Legislators were asked to support SB 348. SB 348 is an alternative to Kernan/Shepard's plan and is designed to help each county develop its own local plan for managing limited resources in the goal of providing library access to all residents. For details on the bill, check online at www.in.gov

The day ended with libraries joining together as a single voice for public libraries in Indiana by visiting the State House and talking with legislators unable to attend the luncheon. Those attending had the rare opportunity to actually view the final reading of SB 348 in the Senate and see it passed with a 36 yeas-13 nays vote. It now returns to the House.

Citizens are asked to support local libraries and to "get vocal" by going to www.indianalibrarychampions.org for additional information and instruction. An information sheet with legislators' contact information is available at the Warsaw Library Circulation desk as well.
