ENTERPRISE, Ala. – Lewis DeVon Handgen, 80, Chancellor, Ala., unexpectedly passed away the afternoon of Nov. 12, 2015. He was born Jan. 30, 1935, to Edward A. and Vida L. Bricker Handgen, at his grandparent’s home in Oswego. He was twice married and is survived by his loving wife, Anna Ride Handgen of 33 years, and his first wife, Julia Purvis Munn. Though his death was unexpected, he was doing what he loved most in life, being a part of the great outdoors riding on his ATV. He was a great provider to his family, instilling a strong work ethic to his children and grandchildren. He loved fishing in his ponds, and no project was too great for his creative mind. Born and raised in Kosciusko County, he was a graduate of Leesburg High School with the Class of 1955. He is a former foreman of Schultz Mobile Homes, before following in the industrious steps of his father, mother, brother and sister before him, creating his own businesses. He was a self-made man, and in addition to working full time, began building homes as a side business, eventually creating a thriving excavating business, Handgen’s Excavating, and tree nursery, Handgen’s Nursery, well into his retirement years, with his wife, Anna, by his side. Also surviving are two sons, Kurt DeVon and Kevin; three daughters, Kim Lynette, Kelly Dee and Kristine Leigh; and 13 grandchildren: Jaime Dee, Jeremy Sebastian, Elizabeth Kaye, Christopher DeVon, Jonathan Quinn, Tara Leigh, Alexandra DeVonne, Havilyn Kristine, Daniel Joel, Harrison Frank, Joseph Warren and Ryan Matthew; and nine great-grandchildren: Anastasia, Kristina, Julia Bell, Maya, Stacey, Davis, Maddy, Theo, Ella and Arlo. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vida Colleen Handgen, and her lifelong friend, Janet Hunter, Sarasota, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Diana Christine in 2004 and Ryan Devon in 1980. A memorial service to celebrate the life and work accomplishments of this well-respected and loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Enterprise, Ala. Date is pending the arrival of family members. Contact the church at 334-347-6716 for details.
