Caring Community

Editor, Times-Union:
As we near the end of the year 2000, I can't help but look back with a deep sense of gratitude to our fine community for the support it has given to the programs of the Health Care Foundation of Kosciusko County Inc.; ParentShare; Beds and Britches Etc. ("BABE"); and the Mini-Grant Program. The contributions to these programs have been substantial. Many have volunteered time to mentor young parents. Others have donated clothing and baby supplies for the BABE Boutique. Local organizations have given grants and cash donations to our programs. Literally hundreds of individuals donated time, talents and resources to the Festival of Trees, our annual fund-raiser, and a few thousand attended the special events, viewed the trees and purchased raffle tickets.

To our board of directors and staff, program volunteers and donors, the Festival of Trees committees, as well as the tree sponsors, designers and the event participants and visitors, I can only say "thank you." The contribution of each one of you will be felt for years in the future and will be measured, not in dollars spent, but in lives changed by your generosity. Thank you for making the programs of the Health Care Foundation possible. And thank you for helping to improve the lives of the babies and young families of our community.

Beaman Home Coat Drive

Editor, Times-Union:
Hello, my name is Holli Koser. Though I am only 18 years old, I recognize the importance of community service. I recently held a drive to help support the Beaman Home. Many people do not know what the Beaman Home is and so I explained that on the flier. The importance of this drive was that many women and children are struggling to make a new life and they do not have the equipment to do so. All the fliers said was to bring an item you would no longer need that may be useful to these women and children. I would just like to think that people will take the time to reach out and take a second from their day to help another person. Out of the 500 fliers I sent out, I got a response of about 20. I hope that if this were to happen again, the response would be greater.

I would like to take the time to thank everyone who came out to donate an item. Thank you for your time and consideration. The items we received will help immensely to improve the conditions for these women. I am sure I am speaking for all of them when I say, "Thank you and have a happy holiday." I really appreciate your efforts. Those of you who donated made the drive a success. Thank you.

Editor, Times-Union:
About two weeks ago I was just south of Leesburg on my way home. Unfortunately I misjudged the icy conditions of the road and my car wound up about halfway into a ditch. I am pleased to say that three cars came by and gave me assistance in getting out. One gentleman, who was obviously on his way somewhere, went back to his home to get a chain to pull me out. While he was doing this, two others stopped and they were able to push the car out.

Although I have no idea who the three of you are, I greatly appreciate the assistance you gave me.

I also had another incident last week in which my car broke down just north of Mentone and another helpful person towed my car into his own driveway and let it stay there until it could be moved to the shop. Then he gave me a ride into Mentone.

Thanks to all of you. It is great to live in a community where neighbors and in some cases total strangers still help others.
