Dear President Bush
Editor, Times-Union:Dear President Bush,
Let me begin by saying, "Thank you for all that you are doing for this country and its people. May God continue to bless you and guide you in your struggle in this time of turmoil and tragedy."
Mr. President, my reason for writing to you today is to ask that you remember the "small businesses" in this great nation and the contributions they make every day to the economy. When you think of an "economic stimulus package," remember us, the small companies that deliver the most impact to that economy. We are not a Ford Motor Company nor are we an IBM. However, as a group, small businesses do employ more people, pay more taxes and take greater risks than they do.
Mr. President, when a small business starts in this country, it begins its life in a precarious balance of debts and dreams. It often begins its life at the risk of one or more entrepreneur's personal and family well being. In the state of economic affairs as they exist today, many thousands of small businesses are in danger of losing everything.
Mr. President, if you give us a hand now when we need it, we will help you push this economy to recovery. If you give us a break on our taxes now when we need it, we will hire more people. If you give us a leg up now when we need it, we will kick this economy in the pants and settle the issue of whether a free people in a free market economy really is the world standard of success.
Mr. President, we need meaningful and immediate help to keep going. As small business owners, we are not asking for a hand out. We are asking, though, that you and Congress lower our tax burden. As a small business owner, not only do I pay taxes on my income, property, Social Security, Medicare, federal unemployment and state unemployment for my employees but because my business is located in Indiana, I also pay taxes on my inventory and personal property each year. In addition to all of those business taxes, personally I pay taxes on my income, etc. Please, give us a break. Let me spend more money here at home on my employees and business and on my neighbors and family. Let me invest in my future so that our nation and economy can reap a greater benefit.
Mr. President, let us continue to celebrate this great nation together.
Yours respectfully,

Keep Silver Lake School
Editor, Times-Union:I am writing in response to Mr. Spurlock's letter about Silver Lake. I grew up in Silver Lake. It was a wonderful community. We knew all our neighbors, the downtown was thriving with businesses. It was also a very safe place for kids to grow up. The teachers knew all the kids' families, some even taught the parents of us kids. Mrs. Swick, who was my second grade teacher, who is now in Millers Merry Manor, still remembers me after 30-some years. Why take that away from today's kid? Don't just make them another face in a crowded classroom. So many small towns in Indiana are slowly dying, taking the school away would surely ruin the community of Silver Lake, and that would be a shame. Many of us this past summer traveled many hours to attend a retirement party for Mr. Walther, a teacher who we all love and respect. Not many teachers from large schools have that kind of devotion from former students. Let this generation of young people have the same chance as we did. Keep Silver Lake school alive. Help build their community, not tear it apart.
