Fine History

Editor, Times-Union:
After reading this history that Mr. Coplen has written for the Kosciusko County Historical Society, it makes me proud of the fact that I have always been a citizen of this county.

Mr. Coplen interviewed many people in the county to compile facts, and along with numerous pictures, he has woven them into a beautiful narrative of early county history.

I was thrilled to see a picture of my maternal grandmother in a group of ladies from the Burket Methodist Church.

My children live out of state, but they are graduates of county schools - they will enjoy the copies I am sending them for Christmas.

Thank you, Mr. Daniel Coplen, for your dedication - you have given us a beautiful history.

Act Of Kindness

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing in hopes that you will print this in the editorial section of the Times-Union. I would like to give a long overdue thank-you to a local family. I don't remember their name - in fact, I don't think I ever knew their name - but one night in December 1968 - yes, 1968 - they extended to me a kindness that I have never forgotten.

In 1968, I had returned from Vietnam and was stationed in California. My parents at that time were living outside of Warsaw. I had managed to get a two-week leave and decided to surprise my folks by coming home for Christmas. I flew from San Francisco and arrived in Fort Wayne around 6:30 p.m. At that point I wasn't sure how I was going to get from the airport to my parents' farm. A family saw me standing there at the terminal, apparently somewhat confused, for the husband walked over to me and asked, "Sarge, do you need some help?" I explained that I was trying to get to Warsaw to surprise my parents for Christmas. He went back to his wife, they talked a moment, then he and his wife came back and said that they were going toward Warsaw and offered me a ride. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed at their offer. They made room for me in their car with their three children and drove me all the way to my parents' house. Pulling up to the back door, I got out, thanked them and walked into the house, as they drove off. I opened the back door, walked in and yelled, "Mom, Dad, I"m home!"

The surprise was complete. My parents often said that it was one of the best Christmas presents that I could have ever given them.

Every year since then, at Christmas, I think of that night. I'm sure the family, if they are still in the Warsaw area, also remember that night. I want to thank you for the kindness and Christmas spirit that you and your family extended to me that night at the Fort Wayne airport. I have and will always remember and cherish what you did for me. Thank you!

May God bless you and your family always and in all ways.

Central Park

Editor, Times-Union:
A big round of applause is due everyone involved with decorating Central Park. It is a beautiful sight to behold and I encourage everyone to ride through the park and be in awe of the spectacular picture. It is a wonderful gift to the community. Thank you!
