Rude People
Editor, Times-Union:I hate to admit it, but I agree with Mr. Gerard's editorial in the Saturday, Dec. 11 edition of the Times-Union, "This Holiday, Give the Gift of Civility." People ARE rude and mean!
On the morning of Saturday, Nov. 6, I was traveling south on Ind. 15. Just south of Silver Lake, I came upon a car that was sideways in the southbound lane. As I passed by, I realized it was two older men, trying to get the hood of the car to stay down. I pulled over about one-eighth of a mile south. I got out of my car and walked back to try to help them. All the while, traffic is whizzing by, no one else is stopping to help, as no one is stopping to check on a lone woman walking back toward this car! As I came up to these two gentlemen, I found that the sunroof of this car was shattered, and one of the men was bleeding from his ear! It seems that the day before the owner of the car had hit a deer, which is what shattered the sunroof, and also popped the hood, explaining why it was tied shut with a bungee cord. However, it had popped open this day, when someone sped past them very fast. These two guys were lucky they didn't get hit while the traffic flew past them! I tried to get them to come back up to my car and get warm (and safer from the traffic!) while I called for help. They wouldn't because they were determined to fix the hood and get on their way. I walked back up to my car to look for something I could help them tie the hood shut with and also called 911 to try to get a tow truck or someone to help them.
As I was walking back to my car, traffic still flying by, a family in a minivan traveling north pulled over to see if I needed help, I asked them to help the men behind me and they did.
My point in this letter is that NOT ONE person stopped to help two old men or one lone woman in the bright light of day! If it would have been an out-of-the-way area or in the dark, I would have understood. I realize in today's environment, we must be careful of what we do, but this was ridiculous.
Those who passed us by should be ashamed of themselves. Considering the location, some of those motorists may be readers of this newspaper. If you recognized yourself, I hope you are ashamed.

Thanks To Firefighters
Editor, Times-Union:Thanksgiving definitely took on a whole new meaning for our families this year. On Nov. 15 something happened to my brother and myself that I thought only happened to others and that was a fire. We have a wholesale business (Triple A Warehouse) inside of Steer Inn in Silver Lake and our wood-burning stove had caused a fire to start in the ceiling. By the time we noticed the fire, it was already too widespread for us to do anything. Once the 911 call was made, Silver Lake Fire Department arrived within 3 minutes. They immediately called for backup from Claypool, Akron, Burket, Sidney, Warsaw and Winona Lake. Words can never express the thanks and gratitude that we have for all of these individuals. We thank God every day that no one was hurt and that there are people who feel a calling to be a firefighter or EMT. Now whenever we hear a siren or see a fire truck going out on a call, we think of that day. Due to the quick response of Silver Lake and the call for immediate backup, they were able to save the main brick building and some of our inventory. After a few weeks of cleanup, we were able to re-open our business. Again, thank you will never be enough to express our feelings of gratitude.

Editor, Times-Union:I am writing in regard to the traffic on Ind.13 on 12/13/04. I want to thank everyone for their patience they had with my husband and I while we were trying to catch our doberman which got loose while at the vet's office. I am truly sorry for holding up traffic while trying to get her back into our car. I know everyone had a schedule to make and if you were late because of us, I do sincerely apologize. Not very many people would have taken the time to get out of their vehicles to help or even stop. This goes to show, there are a lot of kind-hearted people left in the world. Thank you again and God bless all of you. I do want to add, that we did catch her and she is safe and secure. Thank you.

Breakfast With Santa
Editor, Times-Union:The child and adolescent staff at Bowen Center would like to thank Wal-Mart and associates for again providing a wonderful experience for our children. On Dec. 11, more than 35 children ate breakfast with Santa and shopped for gifts for their families. This was a great experience for all involved, and it was only made possible with the hard work of all the Wal-Mart associates and volunteers who donated time and money and the Wal-Mart corporation who donated money and allowed this event to take place. Wal-Mart also sponsors an Angel Tree that provides gifts for needy children in our area. We applaud the efforts of all Wal-Mart associates.

Thanks To Shrine Club
Editor, Times-Union:Many thanks go to the Shrine Club of Kosciusko County. They hosted a lovely Christmas party on Dec. 8 at the Shrine Building. Attending were several families from the Early Head Start Home-Based program and others.
We were treated to the talents of "Gus" the Shrine Circus Clown and given a hearty dinner. Santa made a guest appearance and gave each child a gift. He sure had a "Locke" on being the hit of the evening!
Again, thanks for helping our families, who are striving to make warm holiday memories for their children.

Editor, Times-Union:On Dec. 11, I read a report in the Times-Union concerning the benefits derived from Kosciusko County Senior Services. In the article, bus driver Rita Savage is featured. Well, let me tell you, Rita Savage is a truly marvelous asset in the business of transporting the elderly to where they want to go. Rita is always ready and willing to help senior citizens in every way that she possibly can. She is a kind, polite human being who is never too busy to do the "old folks" a favor, and will drive out of her way at any time to help whoever is in need. We tenants here at Retired Tigers Apartments have had the pleasure of dealing with Rita for some years, and we are very fond of her. We greatly appreciate all of the wonderful things that she has done for us. Many residents at the Tigers have often stated that whenever they pass out awards for "Woman of the Year," Rita Savage, a great humanitarian, should certainly be one of the recipients.

Perception Of Christianity
Editor, Times-Union:All of my life, just like so many others, I have tried to learn something new every day, or every second, if one wants to be technical. In this way, life is always a new beginning. Learning, gaining knowledge or understanding is a complicated thing if one is afraid to open new doors of perception. Why fear, they are all clearly marked to suit everyone's interest, knock and it shall be opened to you ...
My perception of Christianity differs from most. I see the prince of peace as a teacher who wanted emulation not adulation. His own words make that clear: "Don't glorify me, glorify God." This teacher taught me that we are all sons and daughters of God, and as divine beings we have well defined responsibilities, not only to the Creator and Mother Nature, but to one another as well.
We are clearly past the age of feudalism. This period of time was permeated with the need for lords and saviors to make one feel more safe and secure. In this new age we clearly realize that "we shall have security only to the extent that we are willing to create it through our own responsible actions." Katherine Rylaarsdam's statement is precisely correct. It is also in accordance with the teachings of so many great teachers from the past. These teachings are no one's intellectual property they belong to the great reservoir of understanding that is free to anyone who thirsts. From an individual viewpoint, perception needs to be panoramic, not myopic. Shortsightedness gets one nowhere. Teachers teach, preachers preach and greed will always overreach. To strain at a gnat and swallow a camel is obviously not a good thing.
When a student is properly taught, they become a teacher in their own right, especially in matters of the spirit. The patriarchy is only half of the story, the other half is matriarchal. Woman's divinity is as equally important as man's divinity. After all, woman is the mother of all men. The goddess is as full of wisdom, beauty and truth as God is. Actually, these are the two aspects of the one God. We are all invited to witness and observe the two becoming one at the wedding. But only if we are dressed properly ... those who attempt to bring their pride and vanity along will be cast into the outer darkness. Those who are dressed properly become one with everything and are allowed to become an observer of the realm of the unmanifest. This is called being born into the spirit. This is an experience that is available to one and all. ... As I near the end of my 500 words I become aware of the difficulty of explaining ineffable understanding. It's almost impossible, however, I'm convinced that I will never stop trying. ...
In conclusion, I want to thank all of those who responded to "Limited Consciousness." Thank you so much for your kind words.
