Money Talks
Editor, Times-Union:Am I missing something?
According to what I read in the Times-Union, the new Center Street "jog" is more than 20 feet less than it was supposed to be. Must be the new math. Good thing they didn't want it through the courthouse lawn. Then we would have to tear down half of the courthouse.
Maybe they could hold a truck rodeo and the fastest one who backs through wins an overnight stay in downtown Warsaw. Second prize is two nights in downtown Warsaw.
Or it might have taken a loop around Donnelley's, who knows? Guess money talks.

Gift Of Sight
Editor, Times-Union:Are you having difficulty finding an appropriate gift for someone this holiday season? Why not give the gift of sight?
Gifts toward sight restoration can be given on behalf of friends or relatives in the form of a financial contribution to the Indiana Lions Eye Bank, Indiana University Medical Center, 702 Rotary Circle, Indianapolis, IN 46202.
Gifts may be made in memory of a deceased, in recognition of an anniversary or to assist in the work of the Eye Bank. An acknowledgement of the gift will be sent to both parties.
What more significant gift could one give than one toward the restoration of sight?

Bush & Rove
Editor, Times-Union:November 2005. Somewhere in the White House.
Dubya to Karl Rove: "Karl, only 35 percent of the American people approve of my job performance. We have accomplished so much in five years. We have redistributed much wealth to our millionaire friends in the pharmaceutical, energy, insurance and banking businesses. We've rendered the working class powerless by sending their jobs overseas. We've kept the poor in their place by keeping the minimum wage at $5.15 a hour. And we've packed the courts with administration-friendly right-wing judges.
"My friends in the corporate-owned media who have benefitted from my no-bid defense contracts and tax cuts to multi-millionaires have turned against me and started asking questions. They're asking why we're in Iraq. They're asking about the prescription drug bill. They're asking about record deficits and out-of-control pork-barrel spending. They're asking about rebuilding New Orleans, the corruption and ineptness of FEMA, the poverty of its residents. They're even asking questions about Judge Alito's approval of strip-searching a 10-year-old girl.
"In the past, they turned a blind eye to my sketchy military service, to my questionable dealings concerning the Texas Rangers. They didn't question Dick's five deferments or his shady Halliburton connections. They didn't ask any questions about our lying our way into a war in Iraq, or ask why we ignored the systematic slaughter and starvation of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese in Darfur. Heck, they barely reported it.
"They didn't really care too much about Dick's secret energy policy designated by secret energy executives."
Karl to Dubya: "As you know, I've been busy lying to a grand jury and trying not to be indicted. But I've been working on a plan. Once again, we will need to engage our friends Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell to instill fear in their adoring masses, by telling them that the liberal are out to destroy Christmas. They will mobilize as never before. This will be 'The Story' in all of corporate-owned media and serve as a distraction from our many scandals at least until January."
One month later. Somewhere in the White House.
Dubya to Karl: "As I said to my friend 'Brownie' after Katrina, 'You're doin' a heck of a job.' Thank God for this diversion. Why, just in the last month, my administration was at risk of even more scandal. The torture policy, Tony Blair advising me not to bomb Al-Jezeera, the phony occupation - friendly stories planted in Iraqi newspapers. Even my pointless trip trip to China. And look, I've gained five points on my job approval rating. Karl, how do I ever thank you?"
"Dubya, they don't call me 'The Architect' for nothing. Now go raise many millions from your elite base and corporate sponsors. We have another election to steal in 2008."
This year if someone cares to wish me a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, I will accept the greeting with the spirit in which it is given. Then I will go do something Christian-like, such as making a donation to the local food bank or animal shelter.
To those of you who wish to hate everyone that isn't a Christian -ÊMerry Christmas.

Time, Politicians & Lies
Editor, Times-Union:Regarding daylight-saving time:
Daylight-saving time started during World War I.
Those in Washington decided on it with the stipulation that after the war we would go back to Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific standard time year round.
But typical of most politicians, they didn't keep their word.
So for years, we have sprung forward and fallen back in the fall, which for a lot of people, messes up their system. Just about the time we get used to the one, it's time to jump again.
Then several years back, Indiana decided to let the people decide if we wanted to keep up the cycle. The Vote was a big "no", in 80 counties out of 92, to daylight-saving time. So the whole state was to stay on the same time year round. But again the politicians didn't keep their word. The northwest and the southwest counties cried that they worked in Illinois and it would be a hardship for them. What about all the years the east side worked in Ohio? They didn't whine.
Anyone who can say, with a straight face, that the majority wants daylight-saving time must not have passed any math courses in their life.
I talked to a Fort Wayne newspaper columnist and he said that he was for daylight-saving time because he is sleeping in the early morning. I told him that when I lived on a farm that we enjoyed the daylight, from 4:30 on, to do the early morning chores.
So it really comes down to the kind of life you live.
These past years since Kosciusko County hasn't changed has been a blessing.
Those we elected to represent us, even admitting that their constituents didn't want daylight-saving time, stabbed us in the back by passing the governor's bill that had been defeated a number of times before.
So much for honesty and integrity. They have just become two words in the dictionary.
They talk of all the benefits that changing would bring but no one ever thinks or talks of the consequences it would do.
This mess should really be taken care of in Washington, D.C. But those elected officials are too busy running the rest of the world and helping everyone else that they have no time to help their own country or its people. The world has gotten too big for us to take care of.
We should go back to Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific standard time and the whole state of Indiana should be in Central time with no division. That's just plain nuts.
The Indiana politicians didn't keep their word and Indiana became the laughing stock of the nation.
And now they want to do it all over again.
