Local Special Olympic athletes recently competed in the Area 2 Bowling meet at Chippewa Lanes in South Bend. Not only were personal pride and accomplishment at stake, but also the chance to earn a spot in the state bowling tournaments at Indianapolis for individuals and Muncie for Unified Teams.

Special Olympics Kosciusko County sent 21 bowlers to South Bend with seven individuals and the Unified Team all earning the chance to compete at the state tournament. Those athletes and their finishing places who [would compete] on Saturday December 1st are: first-place winners - Johnny Belcher, Jerry Davis, Rodney Bouse and Lee Beery; second-place winners - Cathy Schwartz and Teri Hughes; third-place winner was Robert Svinarich; randomly selected to compete was Jim Nuell; and the first place Unified Team consisting of athletes Ed Condinho, Tony Thompson and partners Val Flanagan and Jay Secrist. Good luck to each one in their quest to bring home the gold.

Saturday December 1st the above mentioned athletes traveled to their respective sites to compete at the state level. While the results were not what all had hoped for, they all had a good time competing and renewing friendships made over the years. In the individual competition at Indianapolis with over 600 bowlers competing in the afternoon session, Lee Beery won a Gold Medal and Teri Hughes and Johnny Belcher won Silver Medals.

The other athletes were all awarded the following ribbons: fourth place, Jim Nuell; fifth place, Jerry Davis; sixth place, Cathy Schwartz and Robert Svinarich; and eighth place, Rodney Bouse. There were 50 Unified Teams competing and the Kosciusko County Team brought home a silver medal.

The Tuesday afternoon League Bowling just completed its fall competition at Warsaw Bowl. The battle for first place was intense with Team 1 (Jerry Davis, Kathy Kumfer, Mary Bicknell and John Cox) and Team 8 (Robert Svinarich, Todd Feldman, Mark Bowers and Nate Wilkinson) ending up with identical 24-9 records. However Team captured First Place by having a higher total pin count. Individual awards were: High Scratch Game - Tony Thompson; High Scratch Series and High Handicap Game - Cathy Schwartz; High Handicap Series - Sandy Bibler. Following the final bowling event, a pizza party was enjoyed by everyone.

Basketball practice is in full swing and the athletes are looking forward to their first game. Although we do not have anyone who can match the talents of Michael Jordan, we do have athletes that give their all every time they take the floor. Watch for game schedules to be published in the Calendar section and come support these athletes as they create Hoosier Hysteria - Special Olympics style.

As always, if you are interested in helping Special Olympics or know of someone who could benefit from participating in the numerous programs we offer, please call county coordinator Becky Walls at 594-2962 for more information.

Harry Potter, It's Only a Movie.

First of all, let me tell you I am a witch and I'm a very happy one may I say. Doesn't mean I kill animals, I have pets. Doesn't mean I have or need to do sacrifices, have never cut a hand off of anyone. Can you imagine how messy that would be (wink)? I do stir my cauldron once in a while, not all day like some people think, nor do I have any babies in it.

Astral projection travel I've done, which is great, if you know how to do it and it does not mean you're out there flying on the broom where everyone can see you. Casting spells, yes I do those, too. I have never converted into an animal. Now when you put that Harry Potter on No. 11, that he lies, steals, breaks the rules and cheats by copying another homework, now you tell me, how many kids do that? Lost count, huh! Some kids do that, always have. Some kids pay to have their homework done; lots of kids lie; lots of kids break the rules; so what's the deal here?

Anyone can talk to the dead; some might get a response, some might not. Who knows?

"The Craft," "Practical Magic," "Hocus Pocus," Blair Witch 2," any opinions on those?

Article No. 15: Harry takes mood-altering drugs. Yes, real herbs, never knew herbs were drugs, at least I didn't. I think many people use herbs, does not mean they are using drugs, or does it? I think not. Now please, how many kids out in the real world do take illegal drugs, not herbs?

So people who are witches and sorcerers are going to hell? I think not. I don't believe in it, thank you.

You say these ideas are or can be dangerous for young minds. I think kids have minds of their own; they will do what their minds are set to do.

Witchcraft, to me, has nothing to do with evil. I don't believe in satan; satan has his own power by people who believe in him and I'm not one of them.

Now please don't give me that of a concerned Christian, cause a concerned Christian does not have kids and teens bumping and grinding and all over each other at a dance club. Do you think that's Christian?

So come on. It's only a movie and if parents and kids like the movie, so be it!

May the Goddess/God Bless You.
