Super Bowl Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:As members of the Academic Super Bowl Coaches Team, we would like to publicly thank the Warsaw Athletic Booster Club for their donation of the banner in the Tiger Den that recognized the performance last spring of our interdisciplinary team. Often the community recognizes athletes, but not nearly so often do we recognize academic accomplishments.
Warsaw is fortunate to have had an enthusiastic teacher and principal several years ago to get us started in this competition. With the encouragement of Dick Kline and Ann Robinson, we became involved in these contests. As it first started, Ann coached all of the areas herself. Gradually, those of us signed below have been added. We feel that it is truly the students in this case who deserve the credit for their efforts. As coaches, our main duty is to see that students get the necessary information and then to get them together if possible to do some practice before the meets. It really takes students who are self-starters and motivated to do well in the contests.
We have been fortunate to have had several teams qualify to go to state in the past. Social studies has gone once, math and English have gone at least two years, and fine arts has also qualified for the state level. Last year was the first time we have ever had an interdisciplinary team even qualify for state. The contest is structured so that you compete against teams from school corporations that are the same size, and there are three levels. Our interdisciplinary team not only won first place, they happen to have earned the highest score of any of the interdisciplinary teams there that day.
Students on the academic teams, we are proud of you and your efforts. To the members of last year's team - great!

Sunday's Comments
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is in regard to a letter I saw in the newspaper from Tim Ellis. I know Tim and consider him a friend, but I must disagree with some of his thinking.
His letter was in disagreement with Billy Sunday's comments on drinkers. Calling them "whiskey-soaked, beer guzzlers." And to love everyone and not insult them because of their bad habits.
Unfortunately today, too many non-Christians and Christians believe in this way of thinking. Did Jesus love all his neighbors while on earth? Did Jesus go out of his way not to insult anyone? Absolutely not! More people hated Jesus and despised his teachings than loved him. Many, many times in the Bible Jesus showed anger toward people such as homosexuals, drunkards, tax collectors, adulterers and lawyers. Tim also brought up the notion that Jesus never called people names in the Bible. I could furnish about 30 verses in the Bible where Jesus calls certain people idiots, sodomites, parasites, scum of the earth, whores, leeches and dogs. And there are many more.
The Lord tells you to stand up and go into the den of iniquity and teach them about the Lord and confront them with the Bible and tell how their lifestyle will bring them eternal hell. And you can't always do it with love. The Lord doesn't expect you to love child molesters, murderers or sodomites. To love and understand these people is to in a small way condone what they are. Too many Christians are afraid to be confronting or to insult anyone. I am a Christian who sins daily, but I am also a Christian who will confront homosexuals, child molesters, or worse yet the mothers that allow their bodies to be the torture chamber and execution room for thousands of helpless babies during abortion.
Also I read where Harrison School is having study on diversity. I hope and pray that they aren't teaching children to love and understand homosexuals. Homos are sick, disgusting, perverted and deadly to themselves and the innocent. I ask all Christians and churches to make a community stand against this immorality.

Ten Commandments
Editor, Times-Union:Why should there be a dispute over posting the Ten Commandments in government buildings? What better place for them when our pledge of allegiance states, "One Nation under God, with Liberty and Justice for all."
This turning away from God is what has deteriorated and corrupted our once great nation. Refusing to acknowledge the Ten Commandments will not make them go away. To attempt to pass them off as ancient history and out of date will not make them any less significant and will not make us any less sinful or accountable.

P.S. Remember, Jesus is the reason for the season. We are celebrating the birth of Christ, the King, not X. Therefore Christmas, not Xmas.
Madison Thanks
Editor, Times-Union:The Madison fifth grade enjoyed Courtrooms to Classrooms very much. It taught us a lot about the justice system. It also persuaded us not to commit a crime in our future years of life. The teachers of Courtrooms to Classrooms must care about us to be so concerned about our lives. We think that every fifth grade should have this wonderful program. It really helps out in your life.
Before we end this letter we would like to give special thanks to Robert Reneker and Deb Pennington, the teachers of Courtrooms and Classrooms, for teaching us these special things.

Goal Exceeded
Editor, Times-Union:We want to thank everyone who donated to the Leukemia Society of Indiana. Many people we know and many that we have never met gave generously in honor of Brenna Jeffreys and Leanne Coffman. Thanks to all of you, we were able to exceed our goal of raising $7,400 for the Leukemia Society and will be running in the Honolulu Marathon on Dec. 14.
We hope we have been able to encourage the Jeffreys and Coffman families and to honor Brenna and Leanne in their fight against leukemia and Hodgkin's disease. If in some small way we have helped educate people about the number one killer of children and young adults in America, then training for and running a marathon will mean much more than simply the achievement of a personal goal. Please continue to support the Leukemia Society so that together we can find a cure.
We appreciate the Times-Union for writing a wonderful article back in September concerning our effort. We also want to give a special thanks to all of our corporate sponsors who gave very generously to help us reach our fund-raising goal.
