Festival Of Trees

Editor, Times-Union:
It's hard to believe that another Festival of Trees is past and on the books. But what a year it was! The Festival committee did an outstanding job as they ventured into the lovely new setting of Westminster Hall, expanded the Festival schedule to over two full weeks, and added numerous special events and private parties. It was an incredible experience for us. Even more incredible is the generosity of a community that believes in the work being done by programs like ParentShare, BABE and the Mini-Grant program, and then selflessly gives creativity and resources to make sure that they can continue each year through this event. Once again, I find myself humbled by the enthusiastic participation given to the Festival and throughout the year to these and so many other worthy programs in our community. On behalf of the Health Care Foundation of Kosciusko County Inc., I want to thank our committee, donors, sponsors, designers, volunteers and 3,000 visitors for being a part of this magnificent event and more importantly, for helping to improve the health and well-being of the families in our community. Have a blessed holiday season.

Gun Problem

Editor, Times-Union:
I have no answer to problems but I do have questions for your consideration. If we follow your logic of "Don't blame the guns," do we continue to use this analogy for other areas? What about drugs? We certainly can't blame the drugs. Most of them grow in nature, yet they are outlawed. Why? Because they are a danger to lives.

Don't get me wrong. I hate drugs. At the same time, I question anyone that won't even consider exploring ways and means to increase the safety, handling and possession of handguns. I once read that guns kept in the home for "protection" are seldom used for that purpose, and in fact are most often the means to suicide, accidental shooting of loved ones and friends, frequently by children.

I am not proposing the outlawing of all guns. I am saying that everyone, including our newspapers, should push for dialogue. We all know that the real drive to prevent any compromise in gun control is money.

Now, back to the current situation of school children killing other school children. Just an opinion but, considering that millions of our children have spent numerous hours daily playing violent video games where the sole purpose is to kill anyone in sight, one has to wonder if we are allowing our children to be desensitized to the meaning of life and death. Once again the root cause of the ever more violent games: greed and money. Where are the voices for debate and compromise?

If we hope to ever solve any of these problems, the push must come from the people and institutions in the mainstream, not just from the few with a "cause." For my part, I consider the loss of innocent lives due to the use of guns a national disgrace that should have the same attention we give to issues such as space exploration, defense and the budget.

Sovereign Nation

Editor, Times-Union:
With the World Trade Organization leaving Seattle, we can realize that we can still be a nation governed of the people, by the people and for the people rather than of the few, by the mighty and for the wealthy.

Those in government are supposed to be there to serve the will of the people and the will of the people has, it seems, this time been served.

This is proof that we, the people, can still make a difference. Read your Constitution. Know your rights and exercise them lest they be taken from you. Do not let those who have died to ensure our freedoms have died in vain.

This nation was built by men of great faith who gave everything that they had, even their lives, to ensure us "One nation under God with liberty and justice for all."

We must remain a sovereign nation. The laws governing this nation regarding trade or anything else must be made by and for this nation. No foreign entities should have any part in the making of laws governing this great.
