Peachy Edition
Editor, Times-Union:Your Saturday, December 5th edition of the Times-Union was simply peachy. The "Optimistic Outlook" that appeared in Potpourri was just great.
Sure, maybe Mr. DeWitt and the Car Company did get some free ink. But was it really free? Even with a quantity discount, they had some bucks tied up in this holiday project. I don't know Mr. DeWitt and have never done business with the Car Company, but I can tell you from experience, the advertising and promotion they publish in the Times-Union is better than any car dealer in the area. For the price of the trees they probably could have bought a full page advertisement in full-color in any edition of the Times-Union. However, the Potpourri contributor might remember: "To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others."
News Views also offered an interesting commentary from Mr. Gerard. If we could really believe the polls, it would be a great way to check the pulse of the people. Nielsen, Roper and Belden would all get richer. I understand that the Nielsen Ratings are based on 1,600 U.S. households. Of course they have been randomly selected to represent about 100 million households, give or take a few. The sorry state of television programming is a result. Doesn't that little box just eat up that information?
Even though polling has a few glitches, it would still be better than our current situation where elected officials choose to represent the minority viewpoint and the vested interests. Let the polling begin.
All in all a great column with two minor exceptions. I'm sure Mr. Gerard isn't really a dumb Hoosier. And while many may agree that someone should put a bullet in Sodom's brain, oops, that should be Saddam, the people of Iraq are paying dearly for Mr. Insane's craziness, oops, that should be Hussein. I always thought that Sodom Insane was more fitting.
After all, you couldn't print New Views and I couldn't submit this letter for consideration in the latest edition of the Baghdad Daily Bladder. We would be the ones receiving the slug between the eyes. Some might agree that Bill Clinton has been naughty and stretches the truth, but he isn't remotely close to our modern day Hitler currently ruling Iraq, the butcher of the Middle East.
Thank you Lord for America.

Greenway Development
Editor, Times-Union:This letter is a response to a recent published letter objecting on safety issues the development of a greenway. The Lake City Greenway is a combined Warsaw, Winona Lake and Kosciusko County development project with several goals:
1. Improve access to existing city/county parks and lakes.
2. Creation of a unified countywide park system which connects existing city parks and lakes with an easily accessible and safe walking, jogging, biking and skating paved trail.
3. Creation of an expanded, but unified park system with multiple access points for non-motorized transport.
4. Incorporation of major city institutions and business into the greenway with convenient access points.
Lake City Greenway will produce numerous benefits for our community. Residents will be provided the opportunity to walk, jog, bicycle and skate in the safety of well-marked, paved trails, avoiding major traffic areas. These scenic locations will foster family outings and healthful activities.
We believe the Lake City Greenway has something to offer virtually everyone: children, retirees, handicapped persons, athletes, professional persons, and, especially, families. Safety, particularly for our children, is an utmost concern of the Lake City Greenway steering committee. The steering committee is comprised of community people including several mothers with young children. The planned trail would involve, wherever possible, paths widely separated from city streets. High traffic roads will be avoided, whenever possible, by using trails well off any major thoroughfares.
The portion of the greenway extending from Warsaw High School to the City-County Athletic Complex has been planned to avoid major roads, particularly highways. The planned trail portion that would run parallel to Old Road 30 would be well off the main road and separated by a broad width of grass. The proposed trail would actually improve safety for children, parents and athletes who wish to go to the CCAC by non-motorized transport. Street parking would not necessarily be compromised by this project, particularly if the path does not involve the particular street. No significant project is expected to be free of objectors. Safety, however, is not a basis for objection. Safety will be enhanced, not compromised, with the Lake City Greenway.
