Agnosticism

Editor, Times-Union:
It's too bad that this county has to be ruled by a lot of agnostics and atheists. Now, the nonbelievers demand that you do not hang a "Merry Christmas" banner in any place of business -Êthat you do not honor Christians by saying, "Merry Christmas." The agnostics and the atheists resent the fact that the word, "Christmas" is derived from the holy name of Jesus Christ. Now, they want to take "Christ" out of Christmas and refer to that sacred occasion merely as "Happy Holidays." So, how can any Christian enjoy "Happy Holidays" by eliminating "Christ" from Christmas?

At the risk of being scoffed at for bringing up nostalgia again, I just want to say that in earlier days, there was much less agnosticism and atheism than there is in this day and age; furthermore, believe it or not, there was a time when business establishments didn't begin the Christmas season until the first of December. They didn't bring out their wares or their Christmas trees in July; still, merchants took in just as much loot starting in the first of December as they do today in their attempt to tout the yuletide season in the middle of summer. Years ago, starting the Christmas season in December put folks in more of a Christmas spirit. Then, there seemed to be a feeling of camaraderie and affection toward one another, a mood which lasted throughout the entire Christmas period.

In closing, I wish to state that I hope the atheists, or the civil liberties organization, or whoever, don't completely take over this nation. We Christians want to have the opportunity to enjoy the freedom to do as we please as regards our faith and our religious beliefs without being constantly harassed by a horde of agnostic and atheist doubters who are trying their very best to eliminate God and his Son completely from the environment. Of course, they shall never succeed, for God and Jesus Christ have long existed and they shall continue to exist throughout all eternity.

So, during this special season, the season to honor the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, don't be afraid to stand up and shout, "Merry Christmas!"

Legislators' Ineptitude

Editor, Times-Union:
A short while back a letter praised Mitch Daniels and Dave Wolkins for being wise. Let's take a look at what these "wise guys" have accomplished over the past year.

1. The time mess: they have neighbors arguing Central DST v. Eastern DST, who initially did not want a change at all. Read the book by Michael Downing titled "Spring Forward: The Annual Madness Of Daylight Saving Time." The myth of energy savings was repreated, it doesn't stand up to the facts. If Mitch Daniels were truly interested in saving energy, he would put that fuel-guzzling land yacht he cruises around in on blocks and get a Honda Civic.

2. Closing 37 license branches around the state.

3. The idea of building a road, then turning it over to a private company to charge us tolls to drive on it, now there is a plan. The list goes on.

Kosciusko County needs a representative who will represent us and not be a rubber stamp for the Carmel Crowd.

I have read that a bill will be introduced to repeal this ill-conceived time law. Now is the time for the people who did not want a change to have their voices heard. Get behind this bill with your voices and your money, write a letter or e-mail.

I would support a referendum if it included a provision to just leave time as it is. Having to choose between Central DST and Eastern DST is like having a collection thug saying I am here to break one of your legs, which one do you prefer right or left?
