Just Get Saved
Editor, Times-Union:Ref: Steven R. Frantz
You said, according to the paper, the "War isn't a spiritual battle ... ." Ultimately, you do not know your Bible.
Every car manufacturer gives us a manual (Bible) so to get the best service from the new car. Our God, Creator has given us a manual (Bible) so we may have an "abundant life." John 10:10.
I am reminded when I have something to assemble I usually go about doing it on my own. Often I would have trouble. My wife then says, "Did you read the instructions?" No, I didn't. So I then read it and I do so much better. May I ask you, Steven, "Do you read or study God's Word, (Bible)?" 2 Timothy 2:15. If you do not, you are like an old man with a suitcase running down a hill to catch a large boat for a ride. When he gets to the boat dock, the boat is many feet away from the dock, and the men on the boat are closing the door. The man missed the boat. I am sure that was a disappointment. If you do not study God's word, you are missing the boat, so to speak.
Steven, do you not know our bodies are temples of a Spirit? If you are "born again" God's Holy Spirit dwells within you. If you are not a child of God, some other spirit will dwell in you. 1 Cor. 3:16. You cannot sit on two sides of a fence at the same time. "No servant can serve two masters ... " Luke 16:13.
The war is not over land. I see it as a spiritual battle. A battle between good and evil. The Koran says something like, "War (murder) is good for you, even if you do not like it." One side murders even their own family. What makes a person do something like that? My school teacher said, "It is possible to have eyes and still not see." The dictionary says, "see meaning to understand." The bible says, "Except a man is 'born anew,' he cannot see." John 3:3. If you do not have a Bible, put that on your shopping list. Look up these verses and read them for yourself.
Oh, by the way, Steve, when you go on a long trip, it is well to have a reservation at a motel, right? The following a true story. When going to Florida a time, we had a reservation. I pulled up to the motel and went in to get a key, etc. A man was ahead of me. I heard the lady say something like, "Sorry we are filled up tonight." Then I walked to the desk and told her my name. What a difference. Welcome or not welcome. Do you know you can have your name written in heaven? Luke 10:20. Whoa! That is better than a reservation even at a motel. Eternity is a long time.

A Tribute
Editor, Times-Union:Scripture suggests that a good friend is a great treasure in life. The death of Calvin "Mike" Gill was a great loss to many and a low point in my life.
Those of us who were blessed by his friendship were mentored in Christian attributes. Attributes that St. Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans recommending what they needed to do to live a redeemed life.
He treated everyone with respect and certain degree of grace that put them at ease. He was kind and polite to all he met. Most encounters, whether in business or socially, was enriched by his dignified wit or his humbleness. Most of these encounters ended with a smile or laughter resulting from one of his jokes, his wit or a story about one of his unpredictable, hilarious incidents that he brought upon himself from an endeavor he had undertaken.
In one witticism he attributed his business success in being just a "junkman" was because he "worked on a 5 percent margin. I bought things for a dollar and sold it for five dollars."
As a successful business man he never thought of himself higher in status than others. However, his humbleness was not without pride. He was very proud of his family and was able to deal with life's grief and difficulties without complaint. Because he was a man of God, he was able to turn those difficulties and his grieving into opportunities to grow in his Christian faith.
He also loved unconditionally. He loved his wife, Sue, compassionately. He rejoiced and wept with his friends. I never heard him make a despairing remark about another person. His generosity went beyond financial giving. He whole-heartily gave his time and talent because he believed that the more an individual gave, the more the giver benefited.
This community, this nation, this world would be a better place to live if the majority of the inhabitants were like Mike Gill.

Illegal Aliens
Editor, Times-Union:Some startling facts and figures from the Los Angeles Times and other news outlets should cause any sane person to question the President's judgment, when it comes to criminals from Mexico.
For example:
n 40 percent of workers in Los Angeles County work for cash and pay no taxes, because they are predominantly illegal aliens without green cards.
n 95 percent of murder warrants issued in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
n 75 percent of those on the "most wanted" list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
n More than 67 percent of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal aliens. (Mexican births, paid for by U.S. taxpayers.)
n Nearly 25 percent of all inmates in California detention centers are here illegally.
n More than 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.
n 50 percent of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border, according to FBI reports.
n 60 percent of all occupants in HUD properties are illegal aliens.
n 21 radio stations in Los Angeles are Spanish-language.
n In Los Angeles County, 5.1 million people speak English, while 3.9 million speak Spanish.
n Less than 2 percent of illegal aliens are picking our crops, but 29 percent are on welfare.
n In 1997, the net cost of immigration to American taxpayers was $70 billion. The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services received) for the average adult Mexican immigrant is a negative number.
n 29 percent of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.

Heating
Editor, Times-Union:One month into the winter heating season, your home heating bill may be lower than last year.
But a word of caution: Despite recent downward trends in wholesale natural gas costs, consumers may not always experience lower bills.
Gas utilities are encouraged to "hedge" portions of their wholesale gas purchases - including buying gas months in advance of when customers use it. The purpose of hedging is to protect consumers from price volatility but not necessarily guarantee the lowest gas prices. Utilities pass wholesale gas costs through to consumers on a dollar-for-dollar basis subject to regulatory review; without price hedging, consumers would be vulnerable to a very volatile wholesale gas market - like the one we experienced following last year's hurricanes.
All consumers should continue to conserve energy whenever possible because reducing long-term demand for natural gas may put downward pressure on wholesale prices. In the meantime, budget billing - available from most gas and electric utilities - is a simple, effective way to take the monthly sting out of winter bills.

Animal Populations
Editor, Times-Union:Re: A.R. Wine article of Nov. 29.
Very good - 100 percent right - way too many deer out and around the city. I've seen three dead this last 10 days out at the hospital corner where an elderly lady hit a big one hard.
A very disturbed look on her face; the other two lay side by side in the street.
Fifty-five years ago I lived on a lake out in the country. At that time the DNR staked fish bedding areas to safeguard the nests.
Several years later we were catching small, stunted looking fish, the DNR found to be 5 to 7 years old. So they came up with the idea of poisoning the shallow areas with a suffocant (taking their air).
Next couple of days we had thousands of small bluegill, crappies on the shore. Another lake south of Warsaw tried it. Same results. I was there. I saw it. They were starving (starving to death - too many for their food).
And about every year deer fall through the thin ice. Yes, A.R. - you hit the nail.

Editor, Times-Union:
On Nov.16 at 6:18 p.m. my mom and 12-year-old daughter were hit by someone driving a red grand am. It happened on Ind. 13 in front of Wawasee Middle School.
My mom and daughter were both hurt. Thankfully, they will be fine, but the other driver that caused the accident took off. If possible, I would like to post a $500 reward in the paper for information leading to the arrest of who did it.
Would someone let me know what I need to do.
